The first novel that comes to my mind is Papillon by Henri Charriere (it was turned into a movie starring Steve McQueen in ’73) . It is the true story of a man who escaped the French Guiana penal colony…

The Damage Done by Warren Fellows and Marching Powder by Rusty Young….both incredible! I read The Damage Done in a matter of hours! Both are true stories about life in South American prisons and the cocaine industry.

Do not pick up a book without looking into these two: Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts. It begins with a prison break and there is fair amount of prison life into the book. And Papillon by Henri Charriere.
