any book suggestions that make all the drama interesting and not like a school text book?
i recently traveled to England and am finally interested in the history of the monarchy! any book suggestions that make all the drama interesting and not like a school text book?
Philippa Gregory, Sharon Kay Penman
Penman starts with the Welsh and the reason they became a country under England and she also does the Plantagenets, who are incredibly fascinating as well. Phillipa Gregory handles much of the Tudor line.
thanks! these authors both look great on goodreads
I second those suggestions 🙂 some of my favs.
Philippa Gregory is great!
Philippa Gregory!!!,
Alison Weir. She writes about the Tudors (the most interesting part of UK royal history) and I found them all fascinating.
Philippa Gregory’s books about the War of the Roses are fun too. The White Queen and the White Princess.
Love the books and TV series based on it. I know you are looking for books, but the Tudors on TV is also obsessively compulsive watching, at least for me.
Oh, and Ken Follette’s Kingsbridge series. Great (and long) reads.
elizabeth tudor is my favorite queen ever. baddest.ass.queen ever!
Anne Boleyn by Evelyn Anthony
Philippe Gregory
Thomas B. Costain Below the Salt
The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory. The White Queen is fun too.
Thomas Costain’s four volume history of the Plantagenet dynasty is great narrative history. Antonia Fraser did a one volume history of the kings and queens of England as well as a number of books in specific time periods.
This is not a book, but I truly enjoy Lucy worseley videos on you tube. She is an actual historian. Knowledgeable, interesting, brings it all to life. signme #closetanglophile.
Philippa Gregory or Sharon Kay Penman. For the old stuff.
Anne O’Brien is great too.
Not a book, but I would recommend also watching The Crown. Very accurate, very well done and great acting. Plus, you learn all these things about their private lives that are just fascinating.
i loved the crown!
Agree with recommendation for Sharon Kay Penman
The 6 wives of king Henry is nonfiction but reads like one.
Great one!
“An Uncommon Woman: The Life of Princess Vicky” by Hannah Pakula. Vicky was Queen Victoria’s oldest child, married to Prince Frederick of Germany and mother of Kaiser Wilhelm. And, of course, related to all of Europe’s royal families. Fascinating and full of intrigue.
