I just read them for the 1st time about 2 years ago, and I’m 37 so it did take me a long time to get around to it. When I was young I was to proud of my high reading level to slum it in the YA section. But I’ve revised my attitude as I’ve aged. (I was quite a book snob as a kid) But anyways, they were sooo good I read the whole series in a week!
Hahaa! Nope! After many recent recommendations to read the series I just got the first book in the series from the library the other day. Not my usual style of reading but I have to say, I’m loving it! Waiting on 2nd book to be available?
I haven’t but I have made a bet with my sisters (both are huge hp fans), that if I read the first book I have to pick a book of my choice (that they may not like) and read that!
As one who has read them all (started them with my son) and loved them, and as a former educator, I can tell you that the Harry Potter books are responsible for many children becoming life-long readers. Not too shabby of an accomplishment.
I’ve read the Harry Potter books, and even the side books to Harry Potter (Tales of Beedle the Bard, etc). I love them very much. They are the only books that can get me out of my weird states of depression. If you are thinking about reading them, then you should try them. However, get the British editions as the American editions have been changed slightly. Though, I know many people who haven’t read Harry Potter, and they are equally as amazing as the people who have. 🙂
Funny. I thought I wouldn’t be reading them but then one day I started and, well, I’ve even brought my kids to buy the next books at midnight. I got so hooked! And I’ve re read them too! Luckily we all have choices. Each book is not for everyone. Just enjoy reading what you like.
The movies are great, but I tend to find that the fifth movie didn’t really do a very good job at recreating the book. So much content that was missed in the fifth movie. For example, that drama with Hagrid and the Ministry wizards and McGonagall. They did a good job, but there is so much that is missing.
I got to the one where he goes to the world cup Quidditch. Then I got really bored with it. Everything seemed to come too easily for him. And I don’t believe the book should have been about him. Once again the girl Hermione, busts her butt to solve all the problems in the book, and the boy is made the hero. Blah.
At first I was dead set against reading them because I thought they we are hype. Now I love the 3 books I’ve read so far. I read all 3 of those books in one month.
I will probably be shunned for this but I have not. I’ve watched the movies and enjoyed them and went to wizarding world of Harry Potter at universal studios and had a blast. That is one of my goals this year though. I would like to read them all.
It’s a shame they were so hyped up – J K Rowling is a brilliant writer – I loved them – so much better than the movies and they were good too! I stay away from hype too but these I read because our kids were reading them.
I put off reading them for some time, despite the recommendations of friends who were fans of literature. I have a prejudice against things that are too popular, and also get me from reading Terry Pratchett’s Discworld Series for a long time. When I first moved to Japan I had nothing to read so friends lent me their Harry Potter books. I was very happily surprised. I really enjoyed them, and I found them a wonderful insight to the magical and terrifying changes we encounter when we go from childhood to adulthood.
Same. I was in college when the first three were out and resisted them based on popularity but then I got mono and picked up all three and just lost myself for three days. I’ve reread them multiple times and even taught a humanities elective based on the themes in the book. Love them!
Its fine. BASICALLY bToth movies and the books really sucked, like lemons. The actors that portrayed HP, RW AND HG when they were younger were cutea actors and were good at playing HP, RW and HG. OK, the only person that was good was EMMA WATSON, AS HERMOINE GRANGER AND The actor that died that portrayed Professor Snape was great! As the movies and books started to progress, the books and movies started to suck completely. And now I am comparing HP to Charlaine Harris’ TRUE BLOOD BOOKS AND TV series, those also started to suck, just couldn’t handle watching the tv series or reading the books either. They were vomit inducing to booth, HP books and movies AND TRUE BLOOD books and tv series.
Dorothy, The books are way better than the movies. They do deviate at some point from the books to a degree, as well, but they are 1,000Xs better than the movies. I do enjoy the movies, though.
I’m sorry that you didn’t enjoy either, Janet and clearly feel strongly in that opinion, but I personally loved the books.
I liked the movies better before I read the books. After I read the books and rewatched the movies, I was the typical avid reader who was like, “They didn’t do THAT in the book.” Lol
Natalie Vivirito, I’m a big fan of the books and didn’t love the movies! I felt that too many details that made the world come alive were missing. I’m following this thread not to provoke anyone who has no interest in reading HP but out of curiosity as to why.
I actually taught a humanities elective about the themes in HP to middle schoolers! They approached me with wanting to have an HP class and we designed it together. I also attended a HP academic conference in Chestnut Hill, PA in the fall, which was fascinating. The amount of academic inquiry that the series has generated is impressive!
@Dorothy, That sounds like a really kool class. Yeah, the movies bugged me, but the biggest thing that bothered me so so small and simple, yet had such a powerful meaning. The handshake in the final book. Why not include that. It changed your whole view of Dudley! Ugh!
@Janet, I’m sure the fanfictional work of HP is amazing.
@Natalie, yes! And this is totally irrelevant to the plot but my biggest tearjerker moment is little Colin Creevey sneaking back to fight in the final battle and dying for Harry. It’s a minor moment but to me one of the saddest of the series. Didn’t need to be in the movies but still, it kills me every time. 100% agree with the Dudley moment.
@Dorothy, Right!?! And is it just me or for the 1st time in history did Hollywood underplay a huge fight scene (the final fight) or is it just me??? I thought they were going to make it as amazing as they did in the book and… well, it felt more like the battle was more in the background. -_-
@Natalie, probably because they wanted to focus on harry vs Voldemort. But there were so many great moments missed in there. Oh! Also one of my fav chapters is when the Weasley twins destroy the school with all their pranks before being kicked out in Phoenix. Not necessary to the movies but what an awesome chapter.
@Dorothy Definitely, I agree!!! The twins were my favorite characters and so much was taken out or even changed all together in the movies. I thought my then boyfriend was going to bind and gag me, just to watch the movies in piece. Lol
The movie should have had Ron Weasley’s cousin in the movie. I was hoping Professor Snape had a love interest in the HARRY POTTER movies and had gotten married. What a sad end to his life.
I love the HP FAN FICTION THE BEST, THE ONE’S WITH PROFESSOR SNAPE BEING THE GRAY HORSE, HAVING A LOVE INTEREST, FALLING IN LOVE AND GETTING MARRIED AND HAVING A FAMILY.
I think she was left out of the books because she didn’t end up having a purpose. And Snape is truly a tragic character. But if he had stopped loving Lily and found someone else, all of his sacrifices for Harry would have meant nothing… or rather maybe wouldn’t have even happened.
One can dream, it still SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED, SNAPE COULD HAVE FALLEN IN LOVE WITH SOMEONE ELSE and still sacrificed for Harry and still found love and happiness.
I agree with both of you that Snape is a truly tragic character. I also agree that if Snape would have fell in love, then he probably wouldn’t have looked out for Harry the whole time, nor would we love him in retrospect as much as we do.
I refuse too see the sequel, that will star JOHNNY DEPP! He is a horrible actor and disgusting looking that hasn’t taken a bath and needs to fix his teeth. ( YES! I AM CRITCISING-sorry for the misspelling of the word! of Johnny Depp and his horrid acting!)
I know that HP was categorized as young adult fiction, but i really felt it was more of an adult theme. the characters themselves just happened to be younger.
@Janet, I read it a long time ago so I don’t really remember, but I know I found it boring. I couldn’t stand most of the characters and I felt like she was trying too hard to write an adult book. The Strike books were so different. I reacted viscerally to her descriptions the way I did to HP.
I have to read those. As for Vacancy, I started the audio book, but due to personal issues didn’t have time to finish. I wasn’t thrilled with it, but am willing to read it or try listening to it, again.
@Janet I’ve always felt that Severus Snape was incapable of loving any woman after Lily Evans. His love for Lily was so great that he agreed to look after Harry (from a distance of course) because of that love for her.
@Janet I’ve never read Vacancy yet. I always mean to because I heard so many people rave about the book, but I’ve never picked up the book, yet. JK Rowling is an amazing writer. I don’t feel I’ll be truly disappointed with her work. It’s a shame that her alias was figured out before the book was really published. She sounded so disappointed in her tweets when she found out that the world knew she was the one who wrote that book.
The only character I liked was Professor Snape and the actor (Forgot his name that died) and Hermoine Granger and Emma Watson, she played a perfect know it all.
There are many people who feel that Emma Watson is a Mary Sue when compared to the Hermione of the books. I am not entirely certain what they mean by that, but I think it is because Emma Watson makes Hermione Granger stunningly beautiful and posh when compared to the Hermione Granger of the books. I love Emma Watson. She played a spectacular Hermione Granger. Alan Rickman was an amazing Severus Snape. I can’t see anyone else playing that role as well as he did.
I agree with you completely about Emma Watson’s protrayal of HermoAine Granger and Profnessor Snape: Alan Richman. They were both amazing. Alan Richman’s voice as Professor Snape was NASALLY BUT COMPLETELY HOT!
@Janet I used to write Harry Potter fanfiction. There were a few Snape stories that I really enjoyed. I particularly love the ones that fandom call ‘Severitus’. I mean, those and the ones that show Severus caring for Harry in some way. Those types of stories are usually my guilty pleasures. 😉
I read occasionally. I am into another fandom at the moment and rarely write for HP. I still go to one of the fanfiction sites to hunt down Marauder stories, but more often than not, I find a Severitus and buckle down to read.
@Tiffany FIRST OF ALL I want to appologize for to many emoji’s. Is it alright if I recommend you an HP Fanfiction starring SEVERUS SNAPE. ” FOR THE LOVE OF A HUFFELPUFF,”
If you’re into Severus Snape stories, may I recommend Potions and Snitches. It is a website that has all the Severus and Harry stories. It has fanfictions of all sorts of things regarding Severus. Mentor fics, father/son fics, etc. I used to live on that site, lol.
“FOR THE LOVE OF A HUFFLEPUFF” its funny and romantic, it is with SNAPE. I wish that did sequel to: ” FOR THE LOVE OF A HUFFLEPUFF”! AFTER SNAPE GETS MARRIED and has children. That would be so cool!
That was part of her character and she wasn’t mean-spirited, just determined. You forget that she had to prove herself due to her being raised a muggle.
Aw, we all get really passionate (for or against) things. We just all have different triggers. We all ended up having a really neat conversation, though, as a result. =)
Nope. Well I started this year than up to HP and the Half Blood Prince I suffered from a series fatigue and the book aside. Had a credit available on Audible and got an audio copy to listen to on the way home from work. Let’s just say Stephen Fry made it hilariously bearable ?
hahahaha I’ ve just asked myself the same question few hours ago!!! Worst: I haven’t seen the movies either..
I have them all but haven’t read them?
I have not either. Not interested
I haven’t read them either. ? I borrowed the first two a year ago from a friend but never read them.

I haven’t read them! I don’t like the movies, either.
Nope
No. I haven’t either. And I fully intend not to.
Never read them either. Never saw the appeal.
Not my type of books
No you are not
No you are not. I
Hahaa! Nope! After many recent recommendations to read the series I just got the first book in the series from the library the other day. Not my usual style of reading but I have to say, I’m loving it! Waiting on 2nd book to be available?
I have not read them and have no plans to.
I haven’t either.
I haven’t either.
I haven’t but I have made a bet with my sisters (both are huge hp fans), that if I read the first book I have to pick a book of my choice (that they may not like) and read that!
Have Not, although my 25 yr old son read them all. I think that’s all he has ever read.
Nope.
I did read the Twighlight series when visiting my niece,as there was nothing else to read. Enjoyed those.
They are so so wonderful. Worth giving a try!
I haven’t
Used to despise HP series. Haha I daresay not anymore now. Try it. ?
As one who has read them all (started them with my son) and loved them, and as a former educator, I can tell you that the Harry Potter books are responsible for many children becoming life-long readers. Not too shabby of an accomplishment.
Nope.. Haven’t read them either.
I think it’s not possible to have read it and not be a fan.
Yes!!!!! Only you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Unique
I haven’t and probably wont
Under 8 yes
I’ve read the Harry Potter books, and even the side books to Harry Potter (Tales of Beedle the Bard, etc). I love them very much. They are the only books that can get me out of my weird states of depression. If you are thinking about reading them, then you should try them. However, get the British editions as the American editions have been changed slightly. Though, I know many people who haven’t read Harry Potter, and they are equally as amazing as the people who have. 🙂
You are not alone! I just couldn’t get into them.
I have tried so many times, but I can’t get into it.
Me too

You should. They’re interesting, complex, and very entertaining.
I read the first three, started the fourth, and said, “nope, I’m done”.

Nope. May get to them eventually.
Funny. I thought I wouldn’t be reading them but then one day I started and, well, I’ve even brought my kids to buy the next books at midnight. I got so hooked! And I’ve re read them too! Luckily we all have choices. Each book is not for everyone. Just enjoy reading what you like.
No
No. I’m not going to either.
Yes lol
yes jejeje
No
I think Harry Potter is one instance where the movies are better. They’re still fun to read though.
No! The movies miss all the details that make the books so charming.
The movies are great, but I tend to find that the fifth movie didn’t really do a very good job at recreating the book. So much content that was missed in the fifth movie. For example, that drama with Hagrid and the Ministry wizards and McGonagall. They did a good job, but there is so much that is missing.
I got to book 4 then stopped
Lol!
My son says the last 3 are the best but I just lost interest!
I haven’t. I don’t plan to either.
I got to the one where he goes to the world cup Quidditch. Then I got really bored with it. Everything seemed to come too easily for him. And I don’t believe the book should have been about him. Once again the girl Hermione, busts her butt to solve all the problems in the book, and the boy is made the hero. Blah.
Fanfiction exists for this very problem, lol. 😛 There are many fanfictions out there that are better than the original books!
I haven’t read them either and haven’t seen the movies?
No
Nope
I haven’t read them.
Nope. I haven’t either
I haven’t
Me either ….don’t plan on it!! lol

@Michele Why would you not read such great books?
@Anne Just me I guess…?♀️ (Well, me and a ‘few’ more!)
@Anne I guess we could say “why would you read such books?” 😀

I just read the first one
I read the first one, I have them all and do plan to read them.
Don’t feel bad I just started reading them last year and just watched the first movie yesterday.
LOL! I don’t feel bad at all!?
At first I was dead set against reading them because I thought they we are hype. Now I love the 3 books I’ve read so far. I read all 3 of those books in one month.
I haven’t read them yet
Have no interest in reading them.

I haven’t, but I really want to, just never get around to actually picking them up ?
It’s called avoidance/procrastination! LOL!???
I haven’t.
Watched the first 3 movies on TV and decided to never read ’em.
Love them!
I have watched all the movies but never read the books series.
I haven’t, and never plan to do so.
No ?
i have the films and i would never try read them
Nope! I haven’t! ?

So, over them, what was the point of the books? The last book sucked major lemons!
No your not the only one.
No!
Ewwwwwww!
We’re the same! But I will this year. My boss is making me read it. She gave it as a requirement haha ?
Oohhh, that kinda sucks!?
I haven’t.
Nope
No … I’ve not read H P …. and no wish to do so …. xxx
I agree, its like watch 50 Gray movie. Can’t get your life back.
never read any .
oh, good! Then I saved your life and time. The books are good better than the movie.
I’m so confused. Do you like the books or just trashing the movies?
Its fine. BASICALLY bToth movies and the books really sucked, like lemons. The actors that portrayed HP, RW AND HG when they were younger were cutea actors and were good at playing HP, RW and HG. Ok, I’ll admit, book 1 movie was pretty good, but after that, it was EWWWWW!!!!
Natalie Vivirito, I’m a big fan of the books and didn’t love the movies! I felt that too many details that made the world come alive were missing. I’m following this thread not to provoke anyone who has no interest in reading HP but out of curiosity as to why.

I also attended a HP academic conference in Chestnut Hill, PA in the fall, which was fascinating. The amount of academic inquiry that the series has generated is impressive!
I’ll admit, that I read FANFICTION OF HARRY POTTER!!! That has to deal with PROFESSOR SNAPE! THE FANFICTION IS BETTER!!!
@Dorothy,
That sounds like a really kool class. Yeah, the movies bugged me, but the biggest thing that bothered me so so small and simple, yet had such a powerful meaning. The handshake in the final book. Why not include that. It changed your whole view of Dudley! Ugh!

The movie should have had Ron Weasley’s cousin in the movie. I was hoping Professor Snape had a love interest in the HARRY POTTER movies and had gotten married. What a sad end to his life.
@Janet, the one in Slytherin? She didn’t even end up in the books. Rowling created the character but didn’t end up using her.
Yes. That’s the one!
I love the HP FAN FICTION THE BEST, THE ONE’S WITH PROFESSOR SNAPE BEING THE GRAY HORSE, HAVING A LOVE INTEREST, FALLING IN LOVE AND GETTING MARRIED AND HAVING A FAMILY.

@Natalie, yeah, it wouldn’t have made Albus Severus’ name so poignant.
I know I am pushing my luck in saying this, I wish there was a HP movie sequel about PROFESSOR SNAPE ONLY!
@Dorothy Exactly!
@Janet, it would have to be a prequel since he died.
OOPS! MY BAD!
Has anybody seen the prequels of the HARRY POTTER movies. Fantastical Beasts?
@Janet, yeah. I enjoyed it. I liked seeing the adult wizard of world.
Not yet, but I want to.
Me too.
I know that HP was categorized as young adult fiction, but i really felt it was more of an adult theme. the characters themselves just happened to be younger.
Wait, they’re coming out with a part 2, already?
I like Jk ROWLING ADULT BOOKS: THE CASUAL VACANCY, AND AS ROBERT GALBRAITH: The Cuckoo’s Calling and its sequels. Those are my FAVORITES.
@Natalie Yes, which includes the horrible actor JOHNNY DEPP!
I loved the Robert Galbraith books but couldn’t stand Vacancy.
Why not?
Me 2. I love Robert Galbraith books too. I hope Rowling puts a 4th book out!
@Janet, I read it a long time ago so I don’t really remember, but I know I found it boring. I couldn’t stand most of the characters and I felt like she was trying too hard to write an adult book. The Strike books were so different. I reacted viscerally to her descriptions the way I did to HP.
I don’t have an opinion of Vacancy, I haven’t read it yet. I believe there was tv series.
@Janet, oh, I thought you said you liked it above. Yes, there was a series but I didn’t see it.
Yes, I did only the first chapter, when one of the male characters gets a heart attack and dies.
@Dorothy the tv series was canceled after one season 1.
THE STRIKE BOOKS ARE THE BEST!!!
There supposed to be a tv series based on the Strike books.
I would love to read Granchester Books.
Natalie Vivirito I agree with you about Vacancy, I couldn’t get past chapter 1. But the other one’s are much better. I mean the Strike Books.
I agree. like you and another poster. I’ll give VACANCY ANOTHER TRY.
nope i have not and have dont want to i think the books are just run into the ground on youtube and just over it…
They are 110% worth the read! This makes me so sad…
What makes you so sad?
The only character I liked was Professor Snape and the actor (Forgot his name that died) and Hermoine Granger and Emma Watson, she played a perfect know it all.
There are many people who feel that Emma Watson is a Mary Sue when compared to the Hermione of the books. OMG, SO DO I !!!????!!!! DO YOU STILL READ THEM?!
I can recommend you one. FOR THE LOVE OF HUFFLEPUFF.
@Tiffany ME TOO!!! YOUR MY SOUL SISTER OF LOVING HARRY POTTER FANFICTION! I WON’T ADMIT IT THAT I LOVE HP FANFICTION!
@Janet Sure, recommend away. I want to return to fandom one day, but am always looking for a new fic to read.
Ok. thanks. I love the one’s with SNAPE FALLING IAAN LOVE AND HAVING A FAMILY.
@Janet I can read a good Snape/OC story, but I haven’t read one of those for years. How do you feel about the Severus/Lily stories?
@Tiffany IFFY, BUT I’ll give it. a try.
That was part of her character and she wasn’t mean-spirited, just determined. You forget that she had to prove herself due to her being raised a muggle.
I’m sorry that you were so aggrieved by Harry Potter.
Thank you, I was just being picky And A LITTLE BIT BITCHY. I AM VERY SORRY ABOUT THAT.
I have I high standards about the type of movies or books or people.
Aw, we all get really passionate (for or against) things. We just all have different triggers. We all ended up having a really neat conversation, though, as a result. =)
Yes I was. The FANFICTION IS MUCH BETTER. I still love JK ROWLING AND her ADULT BOOKS.

No. I teach HS Math, and one of my students has never read the books or watched any of the movies.
haven’t read HP… but yeah watched the movies 🙂
No, you’re not. I have read only the first one.
Nope. Well I started this year than up to HP and the Half Blood Prince I suffered from a series fatigue and the book aside. Had a credit available on Audible and got an audio copy to listen to on the way home from work. Let’s just say Stephen Fry made it hilariously bearable ?
If I remember it correctly, he won awards for his reading of the HP series.
If he hasn’t, he should have. He makes it interesting. Him and Tom Hiddleston make audio books intetesting haha
Katherine Kellgren is pretty amazing, also.
I must say that Emma Donoghue did a good job, as well, narrating her own book, Room.
Loved Emma Donoghue’s Room. The movie was great aswel.
Yeah, I enjoyed the adaptation, also. <3
I have all the books and have read only the first. But, hey, they look great on the shelf. ?
