Am I the only one who gets annoyed by people “borrowing” your books and you either have to beg for them back or you never see them again?
Am I the only one who gets annoyed by people “borrowing” your books and you either have to beg for them back or you never see them again?
Yep , won’t ever let anyone borrow them again . Last time they got left on my porch , in the rain 🙁
A coworker borrowed some books like six months ago. Still haven’t seen them.
Yes… I don’t loan them out anymore unless I plan to never see them again (and be surprised when they return it). I just make recommendations unless I’m fine with “passing the torch.”
I don’t get how people can be so rude 🙁 , I would never treat someone’s books like that . Hope they return them soon
I give people one shot. If I don’t get it back in a decent time frame and in good condition, you’re done. I used to have to stamp my name in them because someone was notorious for borrowing them then claiming it was theirs.
And they got a second chance? You’re much kinder than I.
Oh no. That person isn’t even around any more
Ahhh. When you said notorious it sounded like several book offenses.
Yeah I don’t lend people my books
That’s why i never let anyone touch my books 🙂
Knew I’d never see my Glass Castle again too *facepalm*
Usually I give away books, but once I had a signed copy of a book by my health hero John Robbins, and loaned it and never got it back. Still feel sad about it, was 25 years ago
I will not lend books. Recommend yes. Lend no. That said I’m reading a book someone offered on loan to me ???
Yes. I did t once and never got them back. I had to go find the same books at used book sales. I’ll never do it again.
Yes
My sister still has one of my books and is asking for another one lol how bout no
Wow.
I’ll ask for it back and she says “but I haven’t finished it yet” THEN WHY YOU NEED ANOTHER ONE
Also says me who buys books everyday when I have 500 to read still lol
The books I’m currently missing are part of a series. Thankfully, stand alone, but still.
I give everyone one chance. If they don’t return the book, they won’t get more.
It did happen to me years ago & never got them back so I now only occassionaly buy books as I now get them from the library
I usually only give books away, not lend them.
Actually that’s not true. I do have a pretty short list of those I will lend to though. Interesting now that I think about this more
Same here ??
The only person who’s borrowed my books is my mom, and she just takes them and ends up not reading them!?
I dont lend books. Like ever. Not even family or best friends.
I worked with this girl about 10 years ago and give her three books we both have the company that we were working for and I haven’t seen her since … still waiting for those books don’t think I’ll ever get them back ?
I loan books all the time to about a trusted dozen. I record the titles and their names in my ‘book book’. If I need one of them back, I just ask for it.
That’s a really good idea ?
it works for me. I learned the hard way when I didn’t get my copy of The Hab Theory back but many, many years later I found a copy at a used book sale and you could have heard the delighted yips throughout the building. ?
????
When I let someone borrow a book I have to do it with the expectation that I won’t get it back. That way I am not too upset if that happens.
Or forget to whom you loaned a book you are looking for
I loan now only to a best friend & she does the same with me
Learnt my lesson. Reccomend yes, lend no. The only person that I lend books to is my mum who is an avid reader. My kids know not to even touch the books as I had bent pages and covers. They pick the book up and wave it around in front of me to torment me. (Younger kids)
Its a lesson you learn & not let it happen to u again
Annoyingly it’s my other half’s family who (rarely read/don’t own any books) and visit our home (and 5000+books) and frequently leave with a “can I borrow this book request?”.
90% of the books are mine not my partner’s and it’s (so far) been mine that they’ve requested. I feel like I’d be a cow to refuse so am now down 9 books(……Yes, they’re my babies so I take note of them going missing ?) Grrrrrrr….
I now only give out ones I am happy for them to pass on xxx
I dont loan out my books for this very reason! ?
I have only had this happen to me once. I learned that lesson real quick. I was mad because it was a book that was hard for me to find and the only reason I bought it was because I loved it. That’s the only time I buy books for the most part unless they or super cheap. I don’t even think the person read the whole book but they did not give it back to me and then they packed up their house and moved away taking my book with them. And ever since then I don’t really loan on books.
Let’s put it this way if my children see a book on the bookshelf that belongs to me that they like whether is a picture book from my childhood, or an awesome novel, there is a 95% chance I will tell them it’s a great book and they can find a copy of it at the library. I don’t loan books to my kids and they live with me so that should tell you how I feel about my books.
And if you’re curious the book I lost to lending was titled A Day Late and a Dollar Short. Took me 3 years to find another copy.
I only borrow to family. That way I can go to their house and just take it, if they have had it to long. I also make sure that I tell them that it needs to be returned in the condition it left.
Oh don’t even get me started…. Loaned 15 or 20 books to my bio mom, and she DONATED some to a library and the rest to a charity shop. I hadn’t even read most of them.
My mom told me if you can’t afford to lose it don’t lend it
Yeah, it’s annoying
I make it well known i do not borrow books. When people ask why i reply because i do not want to lose them as a friend. Everyone knows not to ask.
This is exactly why I don’t lend my books out anymore. I did it twice. One to my cousin who I haven’t seen in years. And one to a former friend who refused to return it even after months of begging for it back. I actually had to replace both the books because of it. And the friend who refused to return my book, is no longer my friend.
When someone borrows books from me I take their picture with the books so I can remember who has what. 🙂
No, I give them away not expecting them back. I want them passed along to the next person who should read it.
Same.
Yes that is why I never lend my books any more
One great advantage of a kindle!
I do not ‘lend’ books I want to see again.
My secret is …i don’t borrow books. They’re my treasure.
I ended up stamping my name on the inside cover and setting up a shelf in my office to trade books.
I hate that!
I feel like I’m the only person in my small group of friends who is an avid reader, so this has not been a problem for me
That is why I never loan my books out anymore. Have lost several books that way. If I loan a book now it’s not a loan but a gift.
Ugh that’s the worst!
I don’t lend to anyone now.
Or they’re in bad condition. I don’t like to lend books.
I dont borrow books. I an a bookcrosser so I give most away and the ones that are Really keepers stay safely at My House
Yes! I can’t stand it… I’d rather give them away….
Not just with books but things in general. I know a few people like that. ?
Yes! I hate lending out my books! Or they come back ripped or ruined ?
I only lend to one friend who guards them with his life as he knows how precious they are. He brings them back and takes the next in the series.
I never alone a book unless I expect to Never see It Again
I have a ‘loaner’ category that is books I don’t mind never getting back.
Yes! I try not to do it as much anymore.
I’ve pretty much learned not to lend out any book I really want to keep. Lent a friend my copy of Of Mice and Men when I was 19. Last year, 29 years old, I FINALLY found a replacement. FYI, that is my FAVOURITE book.
This is why I don’t loan my books out to anyone anymore. It’s happened to me on a number of occasions. I’d rather just gift them a copy of the book.
??
Both, never anymore!
I usually just give mine away once I’m finished. I like to pass my books along.
