I’m of the reverse opinion. I loved it. It was also the only book where I read the book, then saw the movie and found that the movie did the book justice.
I had a pastor colleague recommend it. But I didn’t like it well enough to keep a copy and probably won’t ever re-read it. As a preacher, however, I have to admit having quoted from it.
How different was it compared to the movie? If it really involves a child being killed, I think I’ll avoid it. I just became a parent and it’s made those topics a little too much.
I didn’t particularly care for it although I made it through it. It’s one of the few books where I actually want to see the movie to see if it’s easier to follow/enjoy.
There’s a good bit of bad theology in it but I’m not a good enough Biblical scholar to explain. One of the ministers at my church led a study of it at church when the book was new but I didn’t attend. He was not a fan of it either
Personally, I loved it. I read it quietly, then outloud to my mom and each time I read it something new was revealed to me. Unconditional forgiveness of one’s self and others is where I go with it. I got right into it, even though the beginning was so morose.
Totally true. I used to try and struggle through to the bitter end….but now I just move on to another book. I don’t like wasting what little reading time I have on things I’m not enjoying.
I didn’t like it. I first started it when it came out and didn’t get very far so I gave up. Then I tried again when the movie came out and was forced to finish as I was on a long plane ride. I don’t recommend it…
I referred to it as a novelized constructive theology. (Yes, I graduated from seminary.) While it had some dynamic and helpful imagery I found it to be fundamentally lame. It was as if the author wanted it to ‘all turn out.’
No…you are not alone. I tried to read it for my Bible study group and hated it…I could not finish it. It is one of the worst pieces of garbage written and his theology is completely of base. I don’t see how it is on the list.
I loved The Shack, although I can see where the writing seems “cheesy” to some…took a bit for me to get into the story too, but at some point, I was hooked. Bought Eve after that and have yet to read it. I started it and now have to restart, as it’s been a long while. Just couldn’t get into it….will give it another try soon! Did you also read Crossroads by the same author? If so, what did you think? I haven’t yet picked that one up.
@Misty – no, I’ve not read that…it even heard of it. Eve was a far, far cry from The Shack, but still a good book. I’ll have to check out the new one!!!
I’m about to start reading it..cover to cover so I’ll find out. I have read 57 of the 100 and believe I can do this. This novel seems like one of the group of the most controversial included in the list. I have often differed with books touted as brilliant and found those thought so so excellent reads. It’s wonderful that the book choices feature reads for everyone and not just one genre. Happy Reading…anyone else planning to read all the books?
I’m going after the ones I haven’t read in the first batch they posted with the books they are covering and weeks. I didn’t read the first two but I will catch up. I will do.
I loved it. I read it during a crisis of faith and it helped walk me off the ledge. I love the idea that we build walls around God with knowledge from other people, until we no longer have a personal relationship anymore with the true God. Then the message of unconditional love and power of forgiveness to round it out. I don’t know, it was exactly what I needed at a very difficult time.
Agreed. I’m a fellow atheist, and, while I don’t object to religious writings as religious writings (I love “The Consolation of Philosophy” by Boethius,”Paradise Lost” by Milton, the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins, “The Book of Margery Kempe”, and “Wise Blood” by O’Connor, for example), I would prefer that they be thoughtful, not cliché, and well-written. None of those are ways I would describe “The Shack”.
Question is why. Why did so many dislike it? I felt the same about Cold Mountain. Too much description. Think movie more interesting because, it’s just easier.
The hype far surpassed the book. I’ve read a lot of murder mysteries and this was just another one. Later I listened to the audio version and enjoyed it more, but it wasn’t a “biblical” moment.
So many people I know have praised this story, so I read the book and watched the movie while trying to keep an open mind. My personal opinion is it is a subpar story with problematic claims about precious realities.
I did not like it. I was led to believe that it was a true story. When I found out it was fiction I was very unhappy. I felt like I had been conned into reading it.
I get the premise ( an interesting story ) but it was so poorly written that I had a hard time getting past that. I did watch the movie and liked that a bit more.
I am so happy to read all of these comments! For years I’ve felt like the only one! (I didn’t like Redeeming Love, either…but we don’t have to go there!)
So funny, we must have similar tastes. I didn’t like Redeeming Love either when our book club read it. Everyone else was going on and on about how great it was and I was like “meh”! LOL
No, I have finally realized that just because a book is a bestseller, a classic, or popular doesn’t mean I will like it or even that it is a “must” read for ME. When I didn’t like something I would wonder, am I not intellectual enough, am I not spiritual enough, is my imagination not enough, is my comprehension not enough? With gratitude I finally realized I am enough in every way that makes me enough, I simply did not like the book. Thank God for my Kindle and sample downloads. The samples eliminate the need to purchase a book only to find out I don’t care for it. Also not my cup of tea, “100 Years of Solitude.” Oh, and not on the list, but Neil Gaiman’s “American Gods.” He is an interesting guy and penned one of the best New Years wishes ever, but that book was murder for me.
@Elisa, like that Oprah selection “The Story of Edgar Sawtelle.” She went on and on and on about that book. Me, not so much and I certainly would not recommend it to anyone. I didn’t like it at all. I think that is the last book from her that I bought without checking it out first or maybe the last book from her at all. Nothing against Oprah, apparently we don’t like the same types of books!
@Lucinda ? I actually loved Edgar Sawtelle! But I picked it up randomly, without having heard or seen anything about it, so maybe I had no expectations vs you expecting it to be great? I honestly did enjoy it…. something about how it’s written (can’t pinpoint what exactly) reminded me of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (also a favorite!).
This was a book that literally it took me 2 years to finish about half of, but once I picked it back up I really enjoyed it and kept reading. What did everyone think of the movie version in comparison?
I did not like it. I tend to be wary of religious-themed work, so I kept that in mind when I read it based on a request by a friend. She herself is genuine and kind in her faith, so I read it based on learning more about her. What I did was ask her what she liked about the book, and I listened. No, it did not make any positive impression on me, and I most likely will not read other similar works unless it’s for someone important to me.
I did not love the “Shack” or” Lonely bones” . I LOATHE books with children as victims. When I read I don’t choose to read about shootings at schools either. Reading to me is a nice escape. I just don’t enjoy reading child victim books. I can experience that tuning into the nightly news.
A big plot trend now seems to be children who disappear and come back some time later with little or no explanation of what happened. Having my son disappear was my – and likely all parents’ – worst nightmare. My son is 20 now but I still can’t read those books.
What I’m noticing on these threads is that there’s no interchange of ideas. I asked a question way back and still waiting for one answer. Tendency is to make a comment to the person who posted and then not converse with anyone else. My question was why didn’t we like it? I said style, too much description; others are u comfortable with subject.
Judy—I did read the whole book. At first I was into it, but then the story was too winding, repetitive, and poorly written that I was irritated with myself for sticking with it. For some reason I remember feeling peeved at the author at the end, but I can’t recall why. It’s been a couple years.
@Kelly Not being critical, just really wanted to know. I’m retired but only read to get sleepy at night. Also, trouble seeing, so into large print. Prob More than you wanted to know.
@Judy—Most responses are to the original poster’s question—which didn’t ask for reasons. A lot of readers will recall reasons for loving a book but those they dislike may be erased from memory except for the dislike. (Unless it was for reasons burned in the brain.) I recall why I disliked it and did answer your question, but at first I just answered the OP with “No.” You’re always free to do a separate post, but most people do not read all comments.
Ironically my husband, our 21 year old son and I were talking about this book last night. Neither of them made it through the entire thing; I read it years ago and really enjoyed it. Just another example of how no book speaks to everyone.
It felt like a misrepresentation of the cover blurb. Read it in it’s entirety and never understand how anyone could like it. I don’t quit books but this is at the top of my “should have” quit list. I put it in the trash so as not to torture anyone else.
After i the first time i had to reread it to make sure that i did read that correctly very good book when i feel stuck or lost i grab the shack have a great read
Could not stand it. Read about 2/3 before quitting, and only read that much because a friend gave it to with a cheerful recommendation. She encouraged me to pass it on to another friend. I think I just gave it to the library.
Based on the cover I thought it was a thriller and when God showed up I was like, “um… so this isn’t a murder/horror type situation?” And returned it. Not my type of thing.
I loved it – one of the more powerful books I’ve read – it made metaphysical truth palatable for people who struggle with nontraditional “takes” on God.
The story still haunts me. I cannot see a ladybug without cringing but the book very much explains The “Trinity” so simply that I could understand. It also helps with understanding our “Free Will” that the Lord gives us. Understanding those two concepts is life changing.
same with me. it spoke to me. it’s a whimsical way of looking at or interpreting heaven. i found it to be totally entertaining and also very meaningful.
You’re a saint. I’m not careful at all! If they can’t handle someone disagreeing with them, that’s on them. (I mean I’m not obnoxious about it, but I don’t walk on eggshells either). ???
You are not alone. As far as its message (and I’m Christian) it was such a simplification it almost takes the wonder out of the equation. Technically, as for the writing- I think the person who labeled it “light weight “ was accurate. But mostly I found it innocuous… There are a few that I question being on the list and this is one.
It read like a management book. A tale with a guide to lead you where they want you to go. Who Stole my Cheese, The One Minute Manager and various other management books all have the same structure.
I hated it! From the first moment I knew that little four year old was murdered, I had a difficult time getting through it. I must not be religious enough or forgiving enough-I wanted karma to get that guy! I will admit that the book did stay w me though-I guess it bothered me so much that I can’t get it out of my head years later!
Never finished it. Tried in real life and when on vacation (no distractions) and lost interest. Still on my Nook. Will try it again if I have nothing else to read.
Our church book club read it and had a very lively discussion. Half the group loved it and thought it was wonderful. The other half (and I aligned with them) did not care for the writing and thought the theology was skewed.
This may be too much. I believe the mystery of faith is something to accept as is. Trying to put a voice and parameters around it feels like reaching too far. I am fine with living in the mystery.
I would add and with respect to the author’s motivation, deep feelings deeply felt . Aspects of the Bible are fantastical and imbedded in historical accuracy. The writers vision bears the weight of truth .
No. I read it because of the high ratings from so many people. They can’t all be wrong?…. yes, they can. I almost stopped reading it several times, but I am not a quitter. It was painful at times, but I finished it.
Ugghhh! My mother in law said that l had to read it, but she also recommends Nicholas Sparks as amazing literature. I thought it was contrived and boring, and in general am not a fan of spiritual books.
No. It was a nice, quick book to read. I actually read it twice, because I was trying to make myself find the emotional connection. Although, I don’t have that life-changing emotional connection to most books. If well written, I enjoy them at that moment; marvel at how someone can weave a story with such interest, and move on to the next book.
Jennifer, you opinion is most welcome and appreciated. But telling people who don’t agree with you that they have a lot to learn is not conducive to discussion and leaves people with the impression that their opinion is not valued or respected. We are book people, we are all about open discussion and seek out varied opinions. That’s one of the reasons we read. ❤️
I believe in the Lord all mighty and having you and your friends gain up on me for telling people to give it a second read is not a Christian thing to do. God Bless!☺
Jennifer Berg you are judging. I thought the book was crap. Contrived drivel to shove more religion down peoples’ throats. Some of us aren’t religious. Some of us believe that we can have an opinion without someone shoving theirs at us. For some of us this was supposed to be an escape from the rot happening in this country. Leave people alone.
Jennifer Berg, i am old, lived alot and read alot. One thing i know is that religion is is OUTFIT that your soul chooses to wear. Everyone has a spirit, seeking and loving and covering their soul in coats of many colors. Judging others for what their soul seeks is unkind and unproductive, only generates others judging you. Judge not, yes? If you think you can’t learn from someone else just move on. Your soul will find mates if you dance with an open heart.
I picked it up at the airport just before I boarded the plane thinking it was a murder mystery. Imagine my frustration when at 30,000 feet I figured out that I was stranded on a cross country flight with an abysmal remake of _A Christmas Carol_. ?
I didn’t love the book and it took awhile to get into it but after s bit it was good and made you think about the loss of a child and how you’d come to terms with it.
Reading is an interactive experience. I read Jonathan Livingston Seagull as a young adult and found it deeply moving, upon re-reading it years later I can’t can’t imagine what I saw in it. Different books speak to you at different times. When you find a book that continues to touch a chord in you through the decades I would say that you have found a classic.
That’s tough. To Kill a Mockingbird is at the top of the list. It’s themes of justice and morality stand the test of time. I first read it around age 12 and have read every few years for four decades since. It never disappoints and continues to resonate. But then there are so many others. Harper Lee described the book best in her letter to a school board that had banned Mockingbird, “Surely it is plain to the simplest intelligence that “To Kill a Mockingbird” spells out in words of seldom more than two syllables a code of honor and conduct, Christian in its ethic, that is the heritage of all Southerners.” Only I would amend Ms. Lee’s word to say that it is the heritage of all human beings. Here’s a link to the story about The letter Harper Lee wrote. She told that school board how the cow are the cabbage. ?
Oddly, the first time I read it, I remember being moved by it. Years later I thought to revisit it and couldn’t even finish it… opted instead to hang onto the fond initial memory of it. I then reluctantly watched the movie with friends and absolutely hated that. Funny how time and experiences cause perspectives, feelings, and people to change.
I didn’t love it. It is worth reading if you travel in a group or groups who will have read it and want to talk about it. Other wise. MEH. That is why I read the first Harry Potter. Worked in Dentist office when it first came out and lots of folks were reading it. So I was at least conversant in the book. 3 years later I read the whole series because my husband was rereading it.
Is anyone else getting PM’s from Jennifer Berg regarding this post? Geez…its a book. Everybody is different. This is the 1st time I’ve had a negative experience with this group…guess I will have to block her.
Ugh, so sorry. I’ve been so happy with not having to deal with any of that here, unlike other groups Ive been in, where I get all kinds of “business opportunities” and “share this to 10 of your friend” type PMs.
I thought I must be some sort horrible person because I wasn’t a fan. I have a strong religious faith and was the only person in my book club to not rave about it. I didn’t find the book genuine 🙁
It was written to share Christian values of forgiveness and grace. I don’t think it was just for money, but it’s unfair to assume that was the motivation. In all, even as a believer, I found it hard to read so I get why some wouldn’t want to read it period. I am okay with the author making a living writing, sure wish I could!
My sister loved it and recommended it so I read it. Made me wonder if we were raised in the same house. I dislike it and think it was more like disrespectful nonsense than Christian literature (as marketed).
I read it in its entirety…threw it in the trash, retrieved it and systematically ripped its pages in half. I didn’t want to be responsible for anyone reading it! Wow! I sound angry! Heh heh…? its really not the worse book I’ve ever read…I just disagreed with it spiritually, philosophically and theologically…?
I did not get it the first time I read it — but in a dream I met Papa – ah – then my interest was piqued. Then later I read it again and it meant way more the second time.
Thanks for the honest review. That book has been on my shelf for years unread. For some reason, I just never believed the hype on that one. I’m donating it.
I read it with a book group so there was a lot of discussion. I liked it, maybe the discussion helped me like it more than I would have reading it on my own.
@Nanette We did not really discuss that much. The focus on was on the three persons and the male character – M. Phillips. Our assumption was just that she had been murdered. I did not see the movie so I don’t know if more emphasis was put on that part of the story. Plus my discussion group read it almost ten years ago so the details have faded. 🙁
Many, many years ago a church friend loaned me her copy of The Shack. She said it moved her and strengthened her faith. I hated the book, but learned a powerful lesson about the power of books. By asking questions about how it spoke to her, rather than trash talking the book, I learned how the images spoke to her as a fine artist. It was a conversation I still cherish.
The Shack is similar to a lot of such literature…a search for assurance in the love of God, the existence of Heaven and direct intervention of the Holy Spirit. People are convinced they see signs all the time. Perhaps they do. A man had a bad fall and needed emergency medical assistance to regain consciousness. His eyes fluttered open and he started wailing, ” I’m moving toward the Light, I’m moving toward the Light. The paramedic whispered in his ear, “You’re OK, it’s just my flashlight.”
Right now I am listening to “Zealot: the life and times of Jesus of Nazareth” This is a study of Jesus the historical figure as compared to the Bible and other texts. I’m finding it fascinating.
I liked the book. I was hesitant to read because reading about a murdered girl does not sound appealing but it did make me examine my beliefs about religion made me synthesize my thoughts and define the parts of the book I did and did not agree with. So overall it engaged me which I like from a book
I couldn’t get into it. The whole dynamic of it, just wasn’t for me. Now that being said, I would like to watch the movie. My fav actor is in it so yea.
The book made me understand the Trinity and how God supports us but gives us free will. I got the understanding for the question-Why God? And it also gave me an aversion to lady bugs. Lol.
My mom liked it and gave it to me to read. It seemed too weird to me. I couldn’t see God that way. I told my mom I didn’t really care for it. She saw something in it she liked though.
I was one of the few in my book club that didn’t like it. Of course, that is the good thing about our club, we review a wide variety of subjects and writing styles.
I really did NOT like The Shack. I almost stopped reading it several times, but kept on reading thinking it had to get better, since so many people liked it. I never liked any part of it. Did not go to the movie.
I felt that way for a long time … I also NEVER quit a book and then I read The Blind Assassin which I hated but kept reading. I decided, after I finshed, that life is too short to read bad books.
Me either
Hated it
didnt get more than a few chapters.. hated it
Hated it. Threw it in the dumpster. Would not pass it on.
I’ve tried to read it three times and it never got better for me ?
Detested that book.
I got only halfway through. It just didn’t grab me.
I’m of the reverse opinion. I loved it. It was also the only book where I read the book, then saw the movie and found that the movie did the book justice.
It’s YUK
Couldn’t read it…
Won’t touch any book like it. Just can’t.
Um, I liked it but wouldn’t say it changed my life. It was okay.
I read “Love Shack” and I thought, “Who hates that song?!”. ?
??????
I put it down about half way through. It just didn’t resonate with me
Tried to read it this weekend and quickly decided it was not for me.
No, I didn’t care for it either. In fact, my Priest said he didn’t get anything out of it either.
Interesting….
I had a pastor colleague recommend it. But I didn’t like it well enough to keep a copy and probably won’t ever re-read it. As a preacher, however, I have to admit having quoted from it.
Couldn’t finish it. Life’s too short to Spend time with bad books.
Could anyone recommend a book or books for me to read as grandma to 12 yr old granddaughter book club? Thank you!
Yes, thanks!
I love Christian fiction but this book was disappointing. It could have been very healing but instead it went off on a tangent that I couldn’t handle.
I didn’t like it either.
No
I started it but could not finish it. Trying to decide if I will attempt it again.
No.
Did not like it at all
Did not like it.
Hated it
I liked it.
I had trouble getting involved with the narrative…I’ve tried to read it twice
It was just okay to me. I did not love it.
I’m 100 pages into it and considering letting go. Not my cup of tea and life is too short to read books you hate
How different was it compared to the movie? If it really involves a child being killed, I think I’ll avoid it. I just became a parent and it’s made those topics a little too much.
I won’t see the movie but the book does involve a child’s murder
It doesn’t show anything other than her in the after life and a few flashes of the abduction.
No.
No, you are not. I refuse to struggle to like a book, too many good ones yet to read.
Yup!
I didn’t. Not my genre, but also the writing just didn’t work for me.
I couldn’t finish it.
I hated it.
I didn’t particularly care for it although I made it through it. It’s one of the few books where I actually want to see the movie to see if it’s easier to follow/enjoy.
I just started reading this book
I guess I can understand why you might not love it but hate it??? Why? Just curious!!!
Just really struggled to get thru it, it did not hold my attention and I thought the writing was poor.
There’s a good bit of bad theology in it but I’m not a good enough Biblical scholar to explain. One of the ministers at my church led a study of it at church when the book was new but I didn’t attend. He was not a fan of it either
There was a ton of controversy when the book came out, for sure.
Nope. Me neither.
Hated it
So glad I am not alone, this book came highly recommended to me and I really struggled to finish it.
Personally, I loved it. I read it quietly, then outloud to my mom and each time I read it something new was revealed to me. Unconditional forgiveness of one’s self and others is where I go with it. I got right into it, even though the beginning was so morose.
I didn’t like it at all.
Loved it! Great message about forgiveness.
Took me starting it 3 times before I actually “got it”!
No. Found it quite manipulative
No, you are not!
I didn’t finish it. Just was not for me. DNF and moved on.
I couldn’t finish it either. Life is too short to try to finish books I don’t like. ?
Totally true. I used to try and struggle through to the bitter end….but now I just move on to another book. I don’t like wasting what little reading time I have on things I’m not enjoying.
@Juli Exactly! I used to try to finish but I feel the same as you. So many books, so little time!?
Hated it.
I started it three different times and cannot get through it.
Wasn’t crazy about it, but would like to re-read it to see what I missed.
I didn’t like it either. I’ve read inspirational books that were more interesting.
Nope.
Intensely disliked it.
Nope, hated it!
Nope.
Not my cup of tea either.
Hated it
I loved it.
Me too
Hated it
Hated it
No you are not.
Nope.
Didn’t like it either. One of the few books I didn’t finish
Did not care for it.
Not alone there
I didn’t like it, either. Definitely not worth the hype.
Liked it
No. I did not like it.
I did not like it
I hated it. Tried to read it twice, but couldn’t.
I didn’t like it. I first started it when it came out and didn’t get very far so I gave up. Then I tried again when the movie came out and was forced to finish as I was on a long plane ride. I don’t recommend it…
I also started it and couldn’t get into it, but picked it up at a later date and read it! Nope…not excited about it!
??
Hated it. Too moralistic and simplistic.
Hated it!!
I started it but I couldn’t stay with it. I picked it up a couple time after that then gave up. You are not alone
I didn’t like it, never finished it and gave the book away.
i didn’t even finish it. I was sooooo bored.
I really liked the book but did not care for the movie!
I’m with you.
Hated it!!!
Super bored, but 8 was reading for a book club and didn’t want to be the one that didn’t finish it. Uggg!
I suffered through for a book club too! ?
I referred to it as a novelized constructive theology. (Yes, I graduated from seminary.) While it had some dynamic and helpful imagery I found it to be fundamentally lame. It was as if the author wanted it to ‘all turn out.’
Totally agree!
Did not like it and never even finished it!!
I did not read the book, but I did not like the movie.
As my dear departed mom would say”drug store literature at its finest!”
I did not care for it at all.
Didn’t love it either.
No…you are not alone. I tried to read it for my Bible study group and hated it…I could not finish it. It is one of the worst pieces of garbage written and his theology is completely of base. I don’t see how it is on the list.
Agree! The theology is just “off” for lack of a better word.
Wonder how it made the list of top 100!
I didn’t either!! It seemed very cheesy in my opinion.
Go Tigers! 😀
It was a disappointment to me: especially after many friends recommended and it was a selection for the book club I was in at the time.
I hated it!!
Didn’t like book but movie moved me.
Loved it!!
I loved it
It was interesting in the beginning but I don’t think I finished it.
I enjoyed it, but honestly, I enjoyed his “Eve” better.
Did not like it at all especially since the theology was so skewed. I was surprised and disappointed it was on the list of 100 books.
Thanks for the reviews! I can take this one off of my list.
Hated it .
Had to force myself to finish it.
You absolutely are NOT the only one 😉
Started it. Didn’t enjoy, moved on….
I read it but do not remember any of it. That tells you a lot.
Hated it!
No, you are not alone
Not a fan either.
Yes it was very controversial when it first came out. Has some very different theological ideas in it. Let us know if you like it or not!
I’m going after the ones I haven’t read in the first batch they posted with the books they are covering and weeks. I didn’t read the first two but I will catch up. I will do.
I didn’t care for it either.
I hated it!
I hated it!
Absolutely detested it. Proselytizing and propaganda.
But that’s just me. LOL
And me 😉
Loved it
Glad it helped you.
With that said, no way is it a book that deserves to be up there with the best of the best. I don’t think it should be on this list. ?
Started it, but could not finish it!
I did not like it.
Hated it as well.
I wasn’t a fan at all.
I was not able to finish it! However, I am still wondering why I did not enjoy it because most of the people I know just loved it!!
Hated the shack
Hated it- blasphemous
I didn’t get very far into it and just couldn’t go on. Too many other books, so little time!
Didn’t like it…and certainly don’t think it belongs on the best 100 books list.
No, you are not
I didn’t like it!
I dnf’d it 80% in!
Couldn’t finish it. Was shocked it made the list, along with several others like “This Present Darkness” and the “Left Behind” series.
Think it had some good ideas, some. But it was really boring and terribly written.
Agree !!
No i started it and didn’t finish it. I couldn’t get past the first two chapters
I haven’t read, but my mom has, she didn’t care for it.
I gave it 2 stars out of 5 on goodreads when I read it.
Was not a fan either!
Hated it.
Nope.
Only read about a third. I wasn’t feeling it.
Hated it
I didn’t love it but did find it thought-provoking.
I didn’t like it either… couldn’t even finish it.
Didn’t care for it.
nope, I didn’t care for it…
I didn’t care for it.
I’m an atheist, there is a subsect of the list that I have no interest in.
Similarly, not sure I would ever find the need to read the Left Behind series. Unless there’s something I’m missing.
I had a hard time with the book, but I LOVED the movie!
No I did not like it either.
This was one time that I preferred the movie…
i could not finish the Shack…
Question is why. Why did so many dislike it? I felt the same about Cold Mountain. Too much description. Think movie more interesting because, it’s just easier.
I did like Cold Mountain, book and movie; but I like books with a lot of description. Have you read any of the Howard Bahr books?
Nope
Didn’t finish it.
Nope.
No
I didn’t love it. It was ok, but it felt manipulative
I did not care for the book, either.
I didn’t love it.
Stopped reading it.
Count me in
Not at all Biblical.
No. I couldn’t finish it
No. I was not a fan!
I never finished it because I couldn’t get into it (have meant to go back and try again; maybe I will soon).
I’m not a fan either. Several friends who never read books loved it though.
Nope. Did not like it.
It was not a favorite of mine.
The book is terrible. One of the few times a movie is better.
I did not either. I could not get over a child being hurt, let alone being able to forgive
The hype far surpassed the book. I’ve read a lot of murder mysteries and this was just another one. Later I listened to the audio version and enjoyed it more, but it wasn’t a “biblical” moment.
No
No.
I did not.
Nope
You are not alone.
Did not even try. The hype turned me off.
The book was much better then the movie
Could not get through it even as an audio, which often makes it easier for me.
No
No you are not alone. I did read it but was dissapointed with it after all the hype over it. The book just didn’t do it for me.
I didn’t care for it either.
I had a hard time finishing it
I could not finish it.
You are not alone. I didn’t hate it, but just felt kind of ‘meh’ when I finished it.
I haven’t read it and really have no desire to.
So many people I know have praised this story, so I read the book and watched the movie while trying to keep an open mind. My personal opinion is it is a subpar story with problematic claims about precious realities.
Very well said @Natalie!
So relieved to find I’m not the only one who doesn’t care for this book!
I did not.
No, you’re not the only one. I stopped reading it after a couple of chapters.
I did not love The Shack. Could not understand all the fuss.
The movie was moving for its message about love and forgiveness.
Not my thing
No. You are not alone. I intensely disliked it.
i did not like it.
https://youtu.be/HZHwxIL9oYo
Nope ?
I didn’t like it and I especially didn’t like the movie.
I didn’t like it at all!
Mixed feelings did not like movie
I didn’t like it.
I didn’t love it either.
It was poorly written and I never understood why it was so popular.
Me too. It’s like Elaine when she was the only one who didn’t like the English Patient
I did not like it. I was led to believe that it was a true story. When I found out it was fiction I was very unhappy. I felt like I had been conned into reading it.
You are not alone.
I did not like it at all!
Loved it!
Nope. I didn’t like it either. Too much of a stretch to ease a pain that could never be eased,
I couldn’t finish it, I tried, turns out not my thing. Francine Rivers is more my style.
I get the premise ( an interesting story ) but it was so poorly written that I had a hard time getting past that. I did watch the movie and liked that a bit more.
I have tried watching the movie, and kinda figured out some ….. very sad
Awful, awful book. My local book club read it and out of six people, two of us felt it was written as a purely commercial venture.
I did not like it. Tried to, but no.
I did not like it
It was not my favorite
I didn’t and I didn’t even finish. I did the audiobook maybe I would feel differently if I did the physical book, but no interest in trying it.
Did not either ?
No. I didn’t enjoy it either!
I didn’t love it either.
LOL
It’s at least a 2 member club now!???
I thought it was just me, but just a little too out there…
I did not love it either.
I didn’t love it but it totally stuck with me.
I didn’t understand it
I can’t even remember much about it, but I do remember detesting it. ?
Me neither.
You’re not the only one.
Loved it! Thought it was a beautiful story
Just “eh” to me.
no I wasnt crazy about it either
I’m glad I read the book first.
You’re not alone. I couldn’t finish it.
I did not care for it
I liked parts of it but it just became too preachy for me
Loved it!
Not a fan.
Nope.
Great post
Agreed. Sometime, just on principle, I refused to read a book that’s all the rave…especially if a certain talk show host/life guru makes it so.
Thank you. Living, learning, and hopefully always growing!
Read it a couple of years ago. Like trudging through mud for me; quite difficult.
Trudging thru really thick mud lol
Did not just love it, but I always have trouble with this type of writing.
I didn’t care for it either!
Hated it.
Couldn’t finish it. Yuck.
Ditto. And the same for my book group
I couldn’t finish it either. I kept thinking of my daughter and what I would do if I were in his position.
No
I’ve never read it, but from what I’ve heard you are not alone.
Had potential but I found the characters especially the godly ones lacking… Just didn’t connect with it
Didn’t like it
I didn’t finish.
It was a poor piece of writing. I did not enjoy it either.
This was a book that literally it took me 2 years to finish about half of, but once I picked it back up I really enjoyed it and kept reading. What did everyone think of the movie version in comparison?
Thought it was just me. I just couldn’t get into it.
Didn’t enjoy it
Yes. ?
I loved it. Found it peaceful and reassuring
No, I did not like it either
Not a fan
I did not like it. I tend to be wary of religious-themed work, so I kept that in mind when I read it based on a request by a friend. She herself is genuine and kind in her faith, so I read it based on learning more about her. What I did was ask her what she liked about the book, and I listened. No, it did not make any positive impression on me, and I most likely will not read other similar works unless it’s for someone important to me.
I skipped the first part because I knew what happened. If you just go from the actual shack part, it’s much better.
Tried to read it, but just wasn’t my kind of book.
didn’t even finish it I hated it so much.
Can’t read “faith-based” books…
Felt like I understood it better after seeing the movie.
I felt the same. Idk why I was so lost in reading it. I want to re-read it after watching the movie to see how I feel about it.
The next book on my to read list – I haven’t seen the movie yetl
Refused to read it. Seemed too religous.
I didn’t love it, but it was a quick read for me.
No you are not!
I did not love the “Shack” or” Lonely bones” . I LOATHE books with children as victims. When I read I don’t choose to read about shootings at schools either. Reading to me is a nice escape. I just don’t enjoy reading child victim books. I can experience that tuning into the nightly news.
Agreed. Both of those books I did not finish, which is unusual for me.
A big plot trend now seems to be children who disappear and come back some time later with little or no explanation of what happened. Having my son disappear was my – and likely all parents’ – worst nightmare. My son is 20 now but I still can’t read those books.
Didn’t love it.
No!!!! I couldn’t finish it
No, I didn’t care for it. Many of my friends and even my daughter liked it but…I didn’t even keep the book.
Awful…never finished it.
Didn’t love it either.
No you’re not! Didn’t like it at all!
I disliked it immensely!
Did not like at all. Proselytizing drivel.
??
I felt the same about Angela’s Ashes
The difference is Angela’s Ashes was about the real lives of poor, struggling people; the Shack is not…
I hated it.
I didn’t either.
Didn’t love it
Didn’t care for it either. I also don’t like Love You Forever, find it creepy. Another opinion not shared by many.
I didn’t like it.
Me too!! I did not like it at all.
It was very distressing and almost put me in a suicide frame of mind.
I did not finish or veiw the movie
Very good book. Thought provoking.
I didn’t like it.
no, you are not alone.
For the first time EVER, I thought the movie was better than the book. I didn’t like the book.
What I’m noticing on these threads is that there’s no interchange of ideas. I asked a question way back and still waiting for one answer. Tendency is to make a comment to the person who posted and then not converse with anyone else. My question was why didn’t we like it? I said style, too much description; others are u comfortable with subject.
story was too thin, too many words for not enough story …. maybe I read too much philosophy in the 60s to be impressed by the current genre
Several people answered those questions : bad writing, bad or painful subject matter, sappy, too religious, prostelityzing…
Judy—I did read the whole book. At first I was into it, but then the story was too winding, repetitive, and poorly written that I was irritated with myself for sticking with it. For some reason I remember feeling peeved at the author at the end, but I can’t recall why. It’s been a couple years.
Sorry I didn’t see your question, and I’m not retired and can’t read every minute of a day
one of the very few books I have not finished
Most said didn’t like it but not why
@Kelly Not being critical, just really wanted to know. I’m retired but only read to get sleepy at night. Also, trouble seeing, so into large print. Prob More than you wanted to know.
Not everyone likes everything; sometimes it just isn’t a match!
Most of my problem with it was theological. I didn’t like the way God was portrayed as a woman.
@Judy it depressed me terribly
@Lynn Thx
@Kelly I’m not happy that it depressed you but like that you gave me an answer. ?
This thread is ridiculously long so that may be why there is little discussion
@Judy I was about 5 years ago.
My Aunt said…you’ve got to read this!!!
I checked it out from the library,and…like I said…
I took it back quickly
@Daniel so,if ya don’t like it,
Find another playground
@Kelly I was answering Judy’s question
@Daniel please accept my apologies
@Daniel Could be. If this were a poll, the book lost. Amazing that such a fuss was made about it and the writer is now so rich.
There are many writers rich off garbage
Blech…….
No hated it too!
I loved the book…the movie… not so much! It definitely caused me to “think outside the box” and get out of my comfort zone.
I have not read it…
Not even interested…
Especially after reading these comments, huh!
Same!
@Judy Indeed!
Nope. Hated it
Didn’t work for me either.
I hated it. hehehe
I couldn’t get into it either.
Hated it.
No I just was unable to hardly get into it and didn’t finish book or see movie
The movie was laughable.
I couldn’t make it through to the end. It is very rare for me to give up on a book, but I did with that one!
On my shelf waiting to be read by me.
Tried to read it after the death of a child in our family. Nope. Couldn’t do it. Probably never will.
Hated it and wondered why folks were into it.
What was wrong with it in your opinion. I have it but haven’t read it yet. Is it too sad, or boring, or not plausible?
Not enough story, too much description and let’s face it, a little too preachy. Like fantasy and want to read about finding God? Then this is it.
Nope….didn’t like….didn’t get very far
hated The Shack. Just not for me at all.
Not a favorite of mine…
Ironically my husband, our 21 year old son and I were talking about this book last night. Neither of them made it through the entire thing; I read it years ago and really enjoyed it. Just another example of how no book speaks to everyone.
No, I did not like it.
No you are not….just could not get into it and quit.
Thanks for being brave and putting that question out there!!!
ME,ME,ME….I didn’t care for the movie and didn’t like the book.
I read it but was bored!
I tried to read it a few times and just couldn’t get into it at all.
I couldn’t even get through the first chapter it was so bad.
I didn’t finish it..maybe it was hyped too much and my expectations were too high
It felt like a misrepresentation of the cover blurb. Read it in it’s entirety and never understand how anyone could like it. I don’t quit books but this is at the top of my “should have” quit list. I put it in the trash so as not to torture anyone else.
Right there with you. And I think you nailed it with the “not as advertised” problem. That’s why I was irked.
“Misrepresentation”..like a post that’s click bait.
I make myself read at least 50pages before I give up and by then I wanted to know what happened!
Good idea
Agree 50 no more than 75. There are too many good reads to try and struggle thru a book that can’t pull you in at the beginning
Didn’t agree with all
Of it. It was really worth the read though. Movies even better
Didn’t agree?
Yes, didn’t agree with all that was in the book
I think I understand. I didn’t agree with him having to forgive the man who killed his baby.
I read that book every couple months the movie was not as good as the book
Do you find it uplifting or inspiring. Haven’t read it yet.
A little of both helps me to maintain control in my life and be stronger mentally
After i the first time i had to reread it to make sure that i did read that correctly very good book when i feel stuck or lost i grab the shack have a great read
I did not even finish it. I can only say that about 2 books – and that was one.
Same here. The first one for me was Little Alters Everywhere.
I struggled through it.
No
I couldn’t even finish it,,,,
I couldn’t finish it.
I found it more than a little schmaltzy.
Couldn’t stand it.
Couldn’t read it – just couldn’t!
All i could say after reading it was “huh??”
Could not stand it. Read about 2/3 before quitting, and only read that much because a friend gave it to with a cheerful recommendation. She encouraged me to pass it on to another friend. I think I just gave it to the library.
Saying I did not love it is nice….
I didn’t like it, either
No, you are not.
I didn’t like it either
Nope. I’m right with you! Didn’t like it at all.
You are not the only one! Hated it!
Nope
Didn’t like it at all…..
No- it went kind of “out there” for me. And I am a born again Christian. It was just “huh?” Lol.
I could not finish it.
I wasn’t crazy about it.
Didn’t finish it. Badly written
I didn’t like it either
I didn’t love it.
I loved that book
I’m reading it now and don’t think I’m going to finish it
No, I didn’t like it either.
A lot of negative reviews on this book. Here’s one that’s a real rant.
http://www.citizenreader.com/citizen/2012/11/the-shack-oh-my-god-the-shack.html
Based on the cover I thought it was a thriller and when God showed up I was like, “um… so this isn’t a murder/horror type situation?” And returned it. Not my type of thing.
There are many who did not like the book. I did, but I am probably in the minority.
Did not like it or appreciate it either.
You kidding? That’s right up there with 50 Shades as far as horrible writing.. Really, really bad.
I loved it also. I would go as far as saying it was life changing for me.
i diddn’t care for it
I didn’t like it, either!
No, I found it to be hokey.
Yes! I couldn’t figure out how to describe what was wrong with it and you hit the nail right on the head!!! Exactly!!!
I loved it – one of the more powerful books I’ve read – it made metaphysical truth palatable for people who struggle with nontraditional “takes” on God.
I loved it! But we all are entitled to our opinion and people like different books. That is why there are so many.
The story still haunts me. I cannot see a ladybug without cringing but the book very much explains The “Trinity” so simply that I could understand. It also helps with understanding our “Free Will” that the Lord gives us. Understanding those two concepts is life changing.
Loved it!
Hated it?
Drivel
I could be the only one who never read it? ?
Bleh. I was even less interested in seeing that movie.
You are not alone. I have yet to read.
I haven’t read it either.
Nope, me either.
Haven’t read it
Nope, I haven’t either.
DI’d not like it. Was unable to even finish it.
Yuck. Predictable and schmaltzy.
I loved it…watch the movie, it might help.
I didn’t like it all. I am curious how the movie is, but I couldn’t get into the book.
Hated it.
You’re not alone. I didn’t like it at all.
They made the movie here in Savannah. Saw Olivia Spencer, saw the locations, but it still didn’t help lol
As a Christian I didn’t like the way the Trinity was portrayed. Forced myself to read it, intensely disliked it & threw it out as pure garbage!
Felt the same way
I’m not going to say I didn’t lovet was a good enough explanation/justification/whatever you want to call it for why bad things happen to kids.
Light weight
Doesn’t appeal!
Did not like it.
Sorry but I couldn’t stand it. Simplistic and predictable.
I have read The Shack twice.inspiring to me
I now readinhave Eleanor OLIPHANT, so far I love this book .
I rather enjoyed it. I read it several years ago when I was at a place in life where it really spoke to me personally.
Same here
same with me. it spoke to me. it’s a whimsical way of looking at or interpreting heaven. i found it to be totally entertaining and also very meaningful.
I watched the movie first and then read the book. Loved them both ❤❤
I didn’t like it, but I’m very careful when I talk about it. The approach was very meaningful to many.
You’re a saint. I’m not careful at all! If they can’t handle someone disagreeing with them, that’s on them. (I mean I’m not obnoxious about it, but I don’t walk on eggshells either). ???
Did not even get halfway through, not worth the time.
Couldn’t finish it
I hated it
You are not alone. As far as its message (and I’m Christian) it was such a simplification it almost takes the wonder out of the equation. Technically, as for the writing- I think the person who labeled it “light weight “ was accurate. But mostly I found it innocuous… There are a few that I question being on the list and this is one.
I didn’t like it.
Silly stuff.
I could not do it….dragged and too unbelievable.
I didn’t like it and didn’t finish it
It started out ok. Didn’t like the end.
It read like a management book. A tale with a guide to lead you where they want you to go. Who Stole my Cheese, The One Minute Manager and various other management books all have the same structure.
I read a few pages; it wasn’t for me!
Tripe
I am not a fan.
Another book on the list I chose not to read. I will not read all 100. Maybe I can do 90
Hated it. I cannot stress this enough. Lol.
One of the few books I could not finish.
Nope ?
Didn’t even finish it
I did not like it.
It’s a hard one to say you liked it. Thought it was moving and would never read it again!
Not my kind of book either.
I have it, Never read it. Only because it involves a brutal murder involving a little girl. It’s hard enough in the real world.
Hated it.
I hated The Shack, glad to hear I’m not alone.
You are not alone. I wasn’t impressed with it either
I didn’t like it either.
Disliked it so much I never finished it.
Not my favorite, but I didn’t hate it.
I found certain parts of the book to be thought-provoking, but there were too many un-Biblical aspects of it for me to recommend it.
Agree. And the biblical aspects were (to me) very contrived. (Although I did like that God was woman…)
It appears this is The Jonathan Livingston Seagull movie of books.
Nope. I didn’t like it either.
I did not care for it either
Me neither
No very poorly written, for starters.
Hated it
I didn’t like it at all – you’re not alone
I’m with you. I hated it.
I didn’t either. I had a very hard time with the entire thing
No, but loads of people were talking about it.
I couldn’t get through it. I thought the writing was horrible.
I didn’t like it at all!
I also didn’t like it!
I couldn’t get into it so I set it aside. I’ve not picked it up again. Maybe someday.
Ugh. Me neither
I didn’t like it but I liked that it started conversations about God.
I never could complete the book
I hated it
No, not my type of book.
No.
LOVED it!
I did not like it, either.
I liked it but his second book is better.
No i really did not like it and i read it twice to see if i missed something
I was ready to NOT like it, so I was surprised that I found it to be a thought provoking read. Thumbs up ? from me.
That’s exactly how I felt about it. Not suspenseful or anything, but certainly thought provoking!
Couldn’t finish
Much as I hate to suggest it, my daughter was very confused by the book, then saw the movie, then went back to the book and it made sense to her.
I thought it was interesting but didn’t love it
Not a fan either
I hated it! From the first moment I knew that little four year old was murdered, I had a difficult time getting through it. I must not be religious enough or forgiving enough-I wanted karma to get that guy! I will admit that the book did stay w me though-I guess it bothered me so much that I can’t get it out of my head years later!
No. I didn’t like it either
No
I didn’t either. ??♀️
I didn’t like it
No you’re not alone.
No. I didn’t even finish it.
Didn’t love it.
No you’re not. It was too weird for me.
I didn’t like it
No. It creeped me out.
No
Not alone, I abandoned it.
Even the descriptions made me avoid it.
Same here.
No, I didn’t like it either.
??
Nope
No
I hated it.
I hated it.
I RARELY abandon a book, but did this one with no regrets.
I abandoned it too.
Never finished it. Tried in real life and when on vacation (no distractions) and lost interest. Still on my Nook. Will try it again if I have nothing else to read.
Me
Nope – I wasn’t able to finish it. Truly didn’t like it at all.
Hated it!!
Nope. You are not alone.
It was just OK
I didn’t hate it, but it was a difficult read for me. It took me months to read because I was working through some forgiveness issues.
Our church book club read it and had a very lively discussion. Half the group loved it and thought it was wonderful. The other half (and I aligned with them) did not care for the writing and thought the theology was skewed.
“Skewed” would be an understatement.
I finished it but thought it was just an OK read. And it will not get my votes…
Nope, I wasn’t a fan, either.
Not a fan…
No; I did not like the book, and the end made it feel like a fake story
no did not love it…went too far out for me….I lost interest…..weird but true.
I agree
Same here.
Me
I found it bizarre
This may be too much. I believe the mystery of faith is something to accept as is. Trying to put a voice and parameters around it feels like reaching too far. I am fine with living in the mystery.
I liked it but it was only mediocre.
Meh!
It was awesome
No you’re not. I was indifferent to it
I thought it was terrible
I loved it.
I think it depends on your journey in life. I couldn’t relate to much of it, but I know other people who sobbed through it.
Not my type of book.
Me too. Typically don’t like those kind of bppks
Did not finish it
Nope
I didn’t like it at all
No- my book club read it and I was the only one who didn’t care for it. Nice to know I am not alone
I struggled to finish it.
I didn’t love it
It was horrendous.
@Laura
@Jaclynn So many people agree! Going on my “won’t read” list.
@Laura It’s extremely Christian.
@Jaclynn #HardPass
Laura, I hated it, too…if that helps you reassure yourself even more that you’re making a good decision to skip it.
Hated that book!
Like much of popular Christian literature it is pure fantasy.
I would add and with respect to the author’s motivation, deep feelings deeply felt . Aspects of the Bible are fantastical and imbedded in historical accuracy. The writers vision bears the weight of truth .
I did not love it!
Thought it was dumb!
No, couldn’t relate
No, didn’t like it
I didn’t like it either.
Didn’t like it
it was just okay to me. I was one of two in my book club that did not care for it
I’m the only one in my family and friends who didn’t “appreciate the message”. It was a very hard read for me.
I feel the same.
Agreed
Didn’t finish it.
No I didn’t.
No. I thought it was pap. I did like the re-imagining of the Trinity, tho.
No. I read it because of the high ratings from so many people. They can’t all be wrong?…. yes, they can. I almost stopped reading it several times, but I am not a quitter. It was painful at times, but I finished it.
I was not fond of that book- although I finished it- It didn’t quite bring home the message I think the author was trying to project
Ugghhh! My mother in law said that l had to read it, but she also recommends Nicholas Sparks as amazing literature. I thought it was contrived and boring, and in general am not a fan of spiritual books.
Nope.
Nope
I hated it, probably because it hit too close to home. My son passed away unexpectedly when he was 12.
Also hated it. Our daughter passed at age 19.
I hated it as well, we lost our son 2 years ago at age 7. I’m so sorry for both of you.
I’m reading it right now and like it. Not the best book ever, but I’ve wiped some tears.
No you are not alone. Didn’t finish it eithrr
So how did this make the top 100? Who made up this list?
People sent in their favorite book.
I won’t even bother to read it. The Alchemist put me off this type of spirituality-lite book.
@Jaclynn! ??
already commented on it! 🙂
Didn’t finish. I’d like to give the movie a try, though.
I was not impressed.
Nope
I loved it.
I did not like it.
No I am with yoy
Oh, I loved it! <3
Less than no interest in it, honestly.
No you are not
I stopped reading it, too.
I didn’t like it. I thought I was the only one. Haha
Nope
I hated it!!!
Not my type of book at all. Could not finish it.
I didn’t love the book, but I loved the message it told
Was not for me…
Enjoyed the beginning, but then thought it was a bit over the top.
No!
Thought I was the only one who did not like The Shack & I am a Christian.
@Rowan nope you are not alone!
Cheese
No I am not a fan
It was horrible. Couldn’t read to the end.
I’m with you! ??
Tried 3 x to read it. Not like me not to finish a book
I did not love the book. Tried many times to read and only finished when my book club selected it. Movie was ok though.
I did not love it
I did not like it.
I didn’t think much of it.
No.
Nope
I liked it and loved the movie
No I did not like it
No, I didn’t love it either.
Not a favorite of mine.
I hated it.
I did not like it.
No. It was a nice, quick book to read. I actually read it twice, because I was trying to make myself find the emotional connection. Although, I don’t have that life-changing emotional connection to most books. If well written, I enjoy them at that moment; marvel at how someone can weave a story with such interest, and move on to the next book.
Whew!!!I thought it was JUST me that felt this way!I feel so much better now!
Didn’t like it either!
I didnt care for it and mystified why others loved it.
Nope
I can’t get into the book. I have tried numerous times and each time I can’t get into it.
No. Did not like it, either. You’re not alone.
I specifically did not read that when I had a choice in my myth class in college.
This is a hard one. It took three tries. But once I saw the movie it helped. Weird cuz movies are usually not so helpful compared to the book.
I liked it, and also the companion book “Finding God in ‘The Shack'”.
Couldn’t be bothered.
No
Not at all
To those who did not like this book …..you have a lot to learn…and clearly need read it again.
: (
@Candace this is the just the kind of book that needs more than a once over. Is what I am saying.
Studying the Bible with reading this book helps with the point.
My number 1 Book will always be The Bible though.
I love learning, but I won’t be reading this book again.
The theology in the book seemed pretty weak, akin to The Left Behind Series. Give me C. S. Lewis any day.
I never judged anyone and aren’t telling me that I am not allowed an opinion.
God Bless!☺
@Candace
Yes, @Jennifer?
@Rowan I love learning too.
Everyone is different. One person loves a book, another doesn’t. It doesn’t mean anything.
Jennifer Berg, please dont message me privately. I dont accept them from people I dont know. Thank you.
Oh boy.
I didn’t get formalized religion out of it. I thought it was more faith based. God can be anywhere, anyone. .And there was a great twist at the end!
I picked it up at the airport just before I boarded the plane thinking it was a murder mystery. Imagine my frustration when at 30,000 feet I figured out that I was stranded on a cross country flight with an abysmal remake of _A Christmas Carol_. ?
Nope
So, your saying that none of the other books written after The Bible copied any of it’s books.
I can see why it would not be everyone’s cup of tea
The movie was good.
i thought it was great and I guess I am the only one
I learned so much about forgiveness, fear, faith in it! Just took me a few tries!
Perfectly said!
So, what is your favorite classic and why?
http://www.businessinsider.com/harper-lee-letter-to-a-school-board-trying-to-ban-mockingbird-2016-2
The Bible. Because it teaches me to look past peoples short comings and to love everyone!
Lets be original now?
For me, its Jane Eyre.
I had the same experience with Jonathon Livingstone Seagull 🙂 Great point on the interactive experience of reading.
Ew, no
I think the movie with John Denver and George Burns was better. 🙂
Me neither.
One of the very few books that I couldn’t finish.
It takes far more courage to stand on one’s own opinion than it does to follow the many.
Not sure what that means.
I have no idea what you are talking about! God Bless!
Ummm, ok. Please don’t murder me! I’ve read too much to know how this might end : )
Nope.
Nope. I didn’t care fore it either. I didn’t like Eat Pray Love either.
Me either! Again, everyone was all like it is an awesome book and I didn’t even watch the movie. And I am a HUGE Julia Roberts fan!
I love it.
I didn’t care for Eat, Pray, Love, just ok.
I couldn’t finish Eat, Pray, Love so I suppose it’s not fair to say I didn’t like it. ?
I lost interest in Eat Pray Love halfway through. Glad I am not the only one
Hated it and didn’t even finish it!
I didn’t like it either
I liked the Shack haven’t seen the movie but didn’t finish Eat Pray Love either
I didn’t finish Eat Pray Love either.
It was awful
Has to finish so I could make comnents?
I didn’t hate it, but it wasn’t my favorite book.
Never read it. Maybe one of these days.
I felt bad because I just couldn’t get I to it and that’s all I heard”you’ve just got to read it”
No, you don’t 🙂
I couldn’t finish it either. Did see the movie, but it didn’t entice me to finish the book.
No, another book I felt “what’s the fuss all about?”
Tried to read it twice…never could finish, because I didn’t care for it. Same with Eat Pray Love.
I wasn’t interested in reading it, but the I had to for a class. I didn’t love it. I didn’t not like it either but it’s not “must read” in my opinion.
I did not like it, either.
I did not like it.
I haven’t read it yet. On my TBR List
Never read it. Just the flap sounded meh to me.
I liked it.
Couldn’t get into it.
I didn’t care for it.
I didn’t finish it. Not my type.
I didn’t care for it much
I did not care for it
Did not like. did not finish book.
Even more thumbs down than Girl on a Train! Lol!
@Nancy Me too! Sometimes I wonder if it’s just me but maybe it’s all about where one is in their life’s journey?
Nope. You are not. Couldn’t get past the first few pages when I realized what it was about. Felt to emotionally manipulative to me, so I was out.
Couldn’t get in to it.
Nope. Got too weird for me and I didn’t finish it.
Nope!!!
I read it in part because it’s set within the first parish I served. It’s been long bough that I may read it again.
It is one that you have to commit to. I didn’t love it or hate it. It did make me think, and I suppose that is the point of it all.
Loved it. Thought provoking.
No I did not like it either
no, i didn’t like it either
I was interested at first, but never finished.
Is anyone else getting PM’s from Jennifer Berg regarding this post? Geez…its a book. Everybody is different. This is the 1st time I’ve had a negative experience with this group…guess I will have to block her.
Oh my. Very unfortunate.
Yes. I didn’t read what she wrote. Not cool
@Candace me either. I just deleted the conversation.
I didn’t care for it, either
It was a terrible terrible book it’s evil
That’s what I thought too. It was too new agey in a cringeworthy way. I really wanted to like it… just didn’t.
There was one part of the book that moved me and helped me forgive the parts I disliked.
I did not like it
I did read, it was one that had potential, but was a little strange for me
Loved the way it made me rethink God and my relationship with him!
Made me rethink my thoughts on others, judgement.
I so agree with Carl and Margarete. It wasn’t literature, just a book written to appeal to a certain segment and rake in $
It was written to share Christian values of forgiveness and grace.
Nope. Didn’t like it.
No, I haven’t read it either.
I liked it but the movie made it real for me.
Me too
No…you are good company. Me.
I saw the movie trailers and decided then that I did not want to read the book.
I did not care for it
Cheddar, Colby, Swiss, and The Shack. . .all cheesy.
I was given a copy and need to read it.
So the consence is it’s not great
It really depends on the individual. It was very successful. It made a huge impact on some people. I didn’t hate it, didn’t love it.
Exactly. One person’s cheesy is another’s inspirational! It’s the glory of the wonder reading brings right to us!
I read it & didn’t care for it. But I’m also an avowed atheist so not exactly the target audience Lol
Same
Well, I’m I life long Catholic and thought it was drivel. Looks like this Shack didn’t play well to either group. ?
Did not care for it.
No you are not. I hated it after 25 pages, read 25 more and quit. Not for me, poorly written.
@Judy I did the same! And door the same reasons you did!
Nope.
I can see some people not liking it. I enjoyed it myself, but I think it’s the kind of book that encourages a little soul searching.
UGH.
Didn’t finish it. Did not like it.
Didn’t finish it. Found it reduced a good theory to remedial pablum.
Spot on!
No, you’re not the only one.
I could not get into it at all and didn’t finish it.
Me either. One of the few books that I did not finish
Carol don’t donate it…throw it away
Trust me
Read it.
Read it and form your own opinion
@Sue I wouldn’t say what I did to any random person. Normally I would agree with you, Carol is my friend.
I read it with a book group so there was a lot of discussion. I liked it, maybe the discussion helped me like it more than I would have reading it on my own.
What did the group say happened to the girl?
@Nanette We did not really discuss that much. The focus on was on the three persons and the male character – M. Phillips. Our assumption was just that she had been murdered. I did not see the movie so I don’t know if more emphasis was put on that part of the story. Plus my discussion group read it almost ten years ago so the details have faded. 🙁
My husband didn’t. Surprised me. I loved it.
The only thing good about that book is that it was the impetus to start a new bookclub for the women in my church
It took me three tries to finish it. Hard starting but I got into it. Although I did not love it I found it an interesting premise.
I didn’t care for it either.
I didn’t manage to finish.
I didn’t read it. Tried and stopped. Gave my copy away.
No, you are not the only one.
I couldn’t get through it
No
I haven’t read it and don’t think I want to !!
Didn’t work for me but lots of friends loved it!
No! I’m so glad I read it!
I couldn’t finish it and I didn’t like it at all
Hated it!
I finished it but I hated it.
Same here. I finished it, but I hated it.
One of the few time the movie is better than the book.
I liked the book so much more than the movie!
I finished it, but definitely not one of my favs.
I got through it but didn’t care for it. It went out there a little too far.
I read it. The end was a little too fantastic for me.
I tried to read it twice — maybe I’ll watch the movie to see what I missed
I loved the book! The movie was okay.
Awful.
I did not like it at all.
Yep.
Couldn’t get into it—didn’t finish it.
I did not love it. I didn’t even like it much.
The movie was awful. Haven’t tried the book yet.
So was the book, haven’t watched the movie.. was thinking the movie had to be better
Did not like it at all.
I didn’t even finish it
I did not recommend it to anyone to read
Many, many years ago a church friend loaned me her copy of The Shack. She said it moved her and strengthened her faith. I hated the book, but learned a powerful lesson about the power of books. By asking questions about how it spoke to her, rather than trash talking the book, I learned how the images spoke to her as a fine artist. It was a conversation I still cherish.
There was a part of the book that moved me and brought me comfort considering the horrific nature of the story.
i didn’t either. it might be i read it after losing my son.
Awful book! Book group read it and we all didn’t like it!
Way too preachy for me!
Meh… not for me. Spiritual propaganda.
didn’t like it either
I didn’t like it either
No. I thought it was awful. Would never recommend it. Have friends who loved it though.?
No,you are not.
Nope! Started but didn’t get far.
I think I understood it better after watching the movie.
It made some good points — especially about how God loves us — but I didn’t love it.
Nope.
These types of books and movies have never appealed to me.
Did not like it
Nope. Wasn’t even inclined to read it.
I didn’t like it. I understand who represented what. And that you will find the answer…please give me a hint. Didn’t finish it.
Excuse me please…I couldn’t understand you represented what. Sorry?
Nope, I thought it was masquerading as good literature but was far from it
I hated it
Did not like it
Didn’t even try it.
No. Not at all.
✋✋
I read it but was not overly impressed by it. Could not understand why everyone else was in love with it. It was a mediocre book.
Just curious-What people disliked? The writing style?content?
It was sophomoric in theme, has no literary merit and often just down right silly. The idea was fine but poorly executed.
@Janet thanks
Content, stereotypes, writing style, philosophy, theology…
Both
I did not like the subject matter.
My problem was the writing style itself. Hard to follow
Thanks
No, non, didn’t like it
This book reminded me the people that are like flying around life. Nothing, but love. Nothing is wrong, everything is love.
I tried it twice and really really disliked it.
I didn’t care for it either.
I liked it.
No, I didn’t care for it in the least. Boring and disappointing.
The paramedic whispered in his ear, “You’re OK, it’s just my flashlight.”
no
Right now I am listening to “Zealot: the life and times of Jesus of Nazareth” This is a study of Jesus the historical figure as compared to the Bible and other texts. I’m finding it fascinating.
Sounds like a good one. My list grows longer every day. Chose some great books from Bill Gates list
I have read the Zealot. Very good historical book.
If you want to read something light and heart touching, read The Story of Arthur Truluv by Elizabeth Berg
Might be a good time for that….
Loved this little book
No, I did not care for it.
If I want to hear what God has to say (always) I read the Bible
I did not care for it at all. Writing was not good.
Read a few chapters. Just not for me.
No, you are definitely not alone!
I liked the book. I was hesitant to read because reading about a murdered girl does not sound appealing but it did make me examine my beliefs about religion made me synthesize my thoughts and define the parts of the book I did and did not agree with. So overall it engaged me which I like from a book
I couldn’t get through it. I tried. Just couldn’t.
Me too
I didn’t like it either, glad I’m not the only one.
No
You are not alone LOL ?
The subject doesn’t interest me.
Me!
I didn’t like it. I didn’t like Eat, Pray, Love either. And Nicholas Sparks’ books don’t interest me?
Yuk: Eat, Pray, Love.
@Anne
Double yuck!
I agree. i don’t like those kinds of books!
EPL made me want to find the author and slap her.
Ewwww to all of the above
@Annie Exactly!!
You are not alone.
Me neither
Maybe. Probably not.
Not book for me
Didn’t read the book, but I did not like the movie either!
Not my cup of tea.
I couldn’t get into it. The whole dynamic of it, just wasn’t for me. Now that being said, I would like to watch the movie. My fav actor is in it so yea.
Did not finish
Could not get through it. Bored me to tears.
No, I had trouble with that book.
She saw something in it she liked though.
wow !! this sounds like a thoroughly terrible book !!!
??
I really liked it but I think it’s a book that people either liked it or they don’t. There is no opinion in between. See if you like it.
Didn’t like it at all…went nowhere..did not finish it,
Nope doesn’t like it and couldn’t even finish it. Did nothing for me.
Did not like it at all
Nope Too contrived
No. I read it but I won’t recommend it.
No. Definitely not.
I was one of the few in my book club that didn’t like it. Of course, that is the good thing about our club, we review a wide variety of subjects and writing styles.
I agree with you, Janice. I didn’t care for that book but love our book club.
I couldn’t even finish it.
Ugh! Did not like it and couldn’t understand why it was so popular.
It was just boring to me. Waste of time.
Right there with ya!
I really did NOT like The Shack. I almost stopped reading it several times, but kept on reading thinking it had to get better, since so many people liked it. I never liked any part of it. Did not go to the movie.
Me either. Went nowhere for me.
I am not a fan either.
No. My sister didn’t like it either.
Nor did I like it. Couldn’t finish it.
Sounds like it might win the title for least favorite novel!
Don’t forget Handmaidens Tale.
I think it will be “50 Shade”
I hated it
No, you’re not
I didn’t love it but I am glad I read it.
Same here.
I had to put it down. I dont read dead-kid books anymore. I also dont read Holocaust books anymore. Just can’t handle them anymore
WW 2 books in general.?
I know what you mean. Have had a surfeit of human greed and cruelty .- I don’t need to suffer anymore !!!
I did not like it either
Briefly… hated it!
Urgh. No, you’re not the only one. Life is too short for something that poorly written.
Nope I didn’t see what the fuss was either.
No
Don’t feel like the Lone Ranger. I quit reading it halfway through and I NEVER quit on a book. My only regret is not quitting sooner
I felt that way for a long time … I also NEVER quit a book and then I read The Blind Assassin which I hated but kept reading. I decided, after I finshed, that life is too short to read bad books.
I read one hundred pages of any given book, if it hasn’t got me by that time, it’s not worth the effort. Too many good books out there to enjoy.
Only book in memory I quit reading
