The Five Flavors of Dumb by Anthony John is pretty good. The main character is Deaf and there’s a lot about various issues she deals with.

Dread Nation by Justina Ireland is also decent, if you want to add a little zombie killing to your life.

“Out of the Easy” by Ruta Sepetys, or “Between Shades of Grey,” also by Sepetys. Powerful story. Also loved “The Librarian of Auschwitz.”

I think it’s considered Junior fiction, but Catherine, Called Birdy by Karen Cushman is hilarious and brilliant at any age! And you learn tons about medieval life. I reread it about every two years, even though I read it for the first time when I was 13. The protagonist is absolutely hilarious, clever, brilliant, infuriating, etc.

Then, there’s Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones (protagonist Sophie) and, in the same series, House of Many Ways (protagonist Charmaine). Castle in the Air, the middle one, has a male protagonist, but Sophie and her sister still feature. All 3 books are brilliant, witty, cunning, and unpredictable. Strong, leading female characters throughout; very unusual and clever writing. ?

A little bit more mature than YA (in writing style) but has a strong female lead is The Bone Season Series by Samantha Shannon. The MC is 19.
