Recently I’ve loved The Witch Finders Sister by Beth Underdown and The Suicide Club by Andrew Williams… The Matthew Shardlake Series by C J Sansom is excellent (Dissolution, Dark Fire, Sovereign, Revelation, Heartstone and Revelation) … The Thomas Chaloner Series by Susanna Gregory is also brilliant… Witch Light by Susan Fletcher… Ashes of London – I forget the author and there’s another one but I have completely forgotten what it’s called right now

Been on an Ellis Peters kick lately… Her Brother Cadfael series… Wouldn’t say you can’t put em down, but they’re short enough you don’t really have to, and long enough to be interesting 😉

Harry Turtledove wrote dozens of alternate history novels, and there is a whole lot of real history in them. And he’s a very good writer, too.

Outlander. Hands down.

There are touches of science fiction / fantasy, but it’s easily ignorable if you’re not into anything like that.

I’m obsessed with Scottish and Early American history, so it’s the perfect fit for me!

There’s The Duchess and The Kings Daughter. Both are set in England. The Duchess is more of a look at 17th century politics and social norms, following the life of a woman who happens to be a duchess who gets involved in such politics. The other is about the short reign of Henry VIII daughter queen Mary, when England pretty much went to hell and back. They’re great reads! So if you like books about English royalty/nearly royalty those are the historical books I’d pick

Anne Perry’s Thomas and Charolette Pitt series is excellent! The books can be read out of order but reading them in order gives you the historical aspects in society, England, and Europe as they occurred.

Lela

My computer quit working mid-post. I think Cynthia Herrod-Eagles Moreland Dynasty series is very good. I learned a lot of English history from 1400 to about 1920. I have read the Pitt series out of order, but have enjoyed it. as well as the ones about William and Hester Monk by Perry.

The Chronicles of Francis Crawford of Lymond by Dorothy Dunnett. Warning: she is a VERY dense writer—there are layers upon layers, with subtle meanings, but her story telling is marvelous and Francis is a fascinating protagonist. The setting is the childhood and youth of Mary Queen of Scots, but Francis has adventures all over the place, including Russia. You cannot really say Francis is the hero. He is one of those people who is way too smart for his own good, which gets him in trouble a LOT. And there are times you just want to smack him upside the head to knock some sense into him! The books take a while to get into, but are worth your patience. These are the books in the series:
The Game of Kings (1961)
Queens’ Play (1964)
The Disorderly Knights (1966)
Pawn in Frankincense (1969)
The Ringed Castle (1971)
Checkmate (1975)
