Something like twilight or that grey crap that NOBODY I know would ever consider trying to remove and read.

Took me a second when I read grey crap to get what you meant ?

1
Cindy

😀 I know… I refuse to capitalize it or call it by it’s proper title, as I don’t believe it deserves my respect 😉

Can’t say I blame you! Although it did open the door to finding a series I like. My friend was going to buy it and the bookstore worker suggested Kushiels Dart instead.

1
Cindy

Hmmm…. One of the reviews puts it on the same level as Dune. I may have to be the judge of that… The story certainly looks better than a bored housewife looking to get a businessman’s rocks off. Hahaha I had a bit of trouble searching for it though. I was looking for a book called Dart, written by an author named Kushiel 😉

1
DevinQuestion author

I personally like it! I’m usually up for reading anything though. I’m not judgemental on books for the most part, I read anything I can get my hands on ?

0
Cindy

If it’s well written, I’ll read just about anything, but even the best story can be ruined with mediocre writing… Just look at what Martin did with shame of thrones… or that horse whisperer book. I practically worship horses and that was so poorly written I couldn’t handle more than a couple chapters, and I almost always finish what I start. If I bail on a book, you can be sure it’s bad.

0
Cindy

Added the book link I found to my favorites bar though… So I won’t forget to find a copy 😉

0
DevinQuestion author

Aww I actually really like GoT ? I don’t think I’ve ever bailed on a book. The closest I got was PS I love you. Took a year on and off to read.

0
DevinQuestion author

I’ve had some disappointing reads though! The bookshop (or bookstore?) was such a letdown

0
Cindy

Oh I finished the martin books… and felt like I had just read a very inappropriate Dick and Jane primer. Have a couple that I just can’t get sucked into, so they’re taking me FOREVER to finish… but the horse whisperer was just so… inane… I just couldn’t. Pretty sure the author hasn’t ever seen anything besides the horsey ride outside of Kmart.

0
DevinQuestion author

Aww that’s no good. You really should know a subject if you plan to write about it. I have a friend who is a big horse person. I’ll have to see if she’s read it.

1
Cindy

Lately I’ve been working on my McCaffrey and Anthony books, a few classics, and Ellis Peter’s Brother Cadfael series… So haven’t had any major disappointments. Honestly, I think shame of thrones was my last let down. The plot and characters had so much potential and the setting is one I typically enjoy. Just martin writes in one dimension…

Curious to see what your horse friend thinks about horse whisperer. I seem to remember elements that were highly improbable if not impossible for a horse to manage.

I’m only reading The Way of Shadows currently. It’s talking forever unfortunately. Good book but my baby rarely let’s me read and it’s the type I need time to really immerse myself in. I can’t just read a page or two at a time.

I think Looking for Alaska was my last disappointing book

Cindy

Try reading aloud to him/her… If they’re young enough, subject matter isn’t going to confuse or scar them. They learn SO much from hearing clear concise speech. The more you read to them and they see you reading, the more likely they are to emulate you when they’re old enough to read themselves. Even if they can’t use it now, reading to them sets them up for a massive vocabulary… All that PLUS baby bonding time. It’s a no lose situation 😀

If he would sit still I would! He’s only 4 months old though and prefers to be outside walking around and constantly moving. I’ve bought him a few books and show them to him when I change him. He’s not interested unless it fits in his mouth and makes his gums feel better? the joys of teething

0
Cindy

Maybe start out with something you don’t have to focus on… Perhaps after a few sessions he’ll start getting in the habit of that being chill out time and you can get back to the one you have to concentrate on. As for the teething?? Rub bourbon on the gums and give him a cigar to gnaw on and he’ll be fine ?

Just call it 50sh(its), everyone will know

1

@Faya I have other terms to describe it… But we all seem to be civilized folk here, so, when in Rome… I try to keep my swearing at a minimum in this group 😀

I call it like that because while everyone think it’s normal title, I know the truth ?

Cindy

Actually… it’s a pretty good story. There’s fighting, gambling, sex, booze, temptation, love, hate, revenge, corruption, redemption… I’ll grant you, the writing style is a bit rough to follow, but once you get the flow it’s not that bad.

Totally! If you forget about every religious thing you’ve ever heard and just look at the straight up text? It’s a pretty wild ride. If you’re not into religion, try reading it as a work of fiction instead of a sermon.

I would definitely need to switch often as well! It seems that the common theme for a lot of people has to pick boring books or books they hate I have to pick one that I loved ?

Is it awful? I’ve never heard of it ?

1
Angela

It’s not that it’s awful I suppose, just such hard work. Written in the 15th century, the language is really difficult. I love Arthurian stories but I struggled with this one.

1
DevinQuestion author

Ah, gotcha! Language like that can definitely be a killer. I’ve read a few where the story was good but the language was challenging and required full focus and rereading some parts.

The Chronicles of Narnia.

It’s a 7 series book.

I’d add levers to the books and only a certain pattern would unlock the secret passage.

( It’s not a single book duh but I still think that would be awesome).
