My go-to comfort re-read series…Magic Binds by Ilona Andrews
Series: Kate Daniels #9
Published by Ace on September 20, 2016
Genres: Urban Fantasy
Pages: 348 pages
Mercenary Kate Daniels knows all too well that magic in post-Shift Atlanta is a dangerous business. But nothing she’s faced could have prepared her for this…
Kate and the former Beast Lord Curran Lennart are finally making their relationship official. But there are some steep obstacles standing in the way of their walk to the altar…
Kate’s father, Roland, has kidnapped the demigod Saiman and is slowly bleeding him dry in his never-ending bid for power. A Witch Oracle has predicted that if Kate marries the man she loves, Atlanta will burn and she will lose him forever. And the only person Kate can ask for help is long dead.
The odds are impossible. The future is grim. But Kate Daniels has never been one to play by the rules…
I love this series. Love, love, love. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve reread it (hint: more than 5, less than 10. I think.) and, even as I write this review, am craving the comfort of Kate and Curran. Granted, the wacky magic-and-strange-creature-filled world they live in probably would be very hospitable to an introverted bookworm like me (unless I could also throw curses like Dali). But maybe I’d be lucky enough to find myself a Curran.
Anyway, maybe I should talk about the book, rather than just waxing on about how much I love this world and these characters. The ninth installment in the series, Magic Binds finds our power Alpha couple settling quite firmly into their new suburban lives. No white picket fence (that wouldn’t keep out the baddies…though it would look cute) but dinners with Dad and terribly dark predictions from the Oracles.
While there’s plenty of action and killing and all that, there’s also a lot of internal battles, as Kate fights against her darker tendencies (which really started raising their ugly heads when she was battling her aunt), deals with some of the repercussions of her claiming of Atlanta, and the fact that Julie is growing up…and growing closer to Roland. (I’m really trying to avoid any major spoilers, especially because there was just so *much* that happened in this book, as well as the prior in the series. This is hard, man!)
And then there’s Kate and Curran themselves. I just can’t get enough of the two of them. They fight, they love, they support one another…I adore them. *happy swoon* Their relationship and watching it develop and evolve as their lives intertwine is one of the major reasons I keep returning to this series. Kate really pushes Curran to the edge in this story as she continues to flirt with death and risk her life (he really hates when she does that).
And then there are the other people in this world. New Alpha power couple Rafael and Andrea are about to become parents…and Andrea is one giant, hungry, touchy bouda. Seriously. Don’t piss this girl off. She’d rip you apart and eat your bones with bbq sauce. Jim and Dali are settling in as Pack Alphas, though Jim seems a lot grumpier these days. Julie is trying to establish her place in Kate’s new Atlanta while spying on Roland (so she says…information gathering, like a good little spy). Ahh! I just want to tell you about everyone but there’s only so much room! Read the book. Awesome story. Great addition to the series. As always, I NEED MORE! 🙂
