26245098Every Exquisite Thing by Matthew Quick

YA Contemporary, 272 pages, hardcover; published May 31, 2016 by Little, Brown for Young Readers; source: publisher

“Perfect” Nanette finds her inner rebel via a cult classic novel (yay). Could have done without Alex (arsehole). Adore how this author just *gets* weird, odd, quirky people and makes them come alive in his stories. 4 stars

25614492Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys

YA Historical, hardcover, 391 pages; published February 2, 2016 by Philomel Books; source: publisher

Many historicals just don’t capture my attention but Sepetys has the ability to take a small piece of history and make it shine out from the page. Four POVs keep the story moving quickly. 4 stars

25708587The Leaving Season by Cat Jordan

YA Contemporary, hardcover, 352 pages; published March 1, 2016 by HarperTeen; source: publisher

Solid writing but the story as a whole–especially the “twist”–fell a bit short. Middie was a bit too vanilla “good girl”,  too much cheese overall. Still, I’ve got some students in mind who will love it. 3 stars

24039424This is Where the World Ends by Amy Zhang

YA Contemporary, hardcover, 304 pages; published March 22, 2016 by Greenwillow Books; source: publisher

What horrible people–manipulative and backstabbing. As much as I disliked all of the characters and the ending (oh, yes. Not good), I liked the writing (*sigh* that makes me sad because I wish I could have liked the story). 2.5 stars

23203977The art of not breathing by Sarah Alexander

YA Contemporary, hardcover, 288 pages; April 26, 2016 by HMH Books for Young Readers; source: publisher

First off, YAY SCOTLAND! Ach aye. Plus, loss (MC’s twin dies in a diving accident) and free-diving (dang, that water must be cold). MC needed a bit more depth but interesting story. 3 stars
