It’s been a while (too long! I missed blogging and you all but…life, yanno) so I’m pretty excited to come back with a bang (hehe. My mind went straight into the gutter there. What? This *is* a romantic suspense novel with some smexytimes.) and be a part of the blog tour for Piper J. Drake’s newest series, Safeguard. The first book in the series, Hidden Impact, featuring an unwilling hero, great heroine and varied settings — yay! So, without further ado, I welcome Piper J. Drake to The Book Swarm for a little one-on-one interview (well, after the book info, that is)!
HIDDEN IMPACT (Safeguard #1) by Piper J. Drake
Kindle Edition, 213 pages; published November 9, 2015 by Carina Press
He’s not the hero she’s looking for.
As part of the elite Centurion Corporation team, military-veteran-turned-
Maylin Cheng is desperate and running out of time. Her younger sister has gone missing but no one seems to take her concern seriously. Her last hope lies in asking an aloof bodyguard for help. He dismisses her outright, but all that changes when she is almost killed in a not-so-accidental hit-and-run right before his eyes.
As Maylin leans on Gabriel, she begins to rely on him for more than just her safety. But as their attraction grows, so does the danger surrounding them. When the elaborate web they’re trapped in unravels, Gabriel will do anything to protect them. Even if that means putting his heart in the crosshairs.
INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR, PIPER J. DRAKE
Welcome to The Book Swarm, Piper! It’s fantastic to have you here.
*offers tea and biscuits* *adds chocolate to your plate*
The Book Swarm: What drew you to using mercenaries, oftentimes known as rather heartless soldiers of fortune just in it for the money and/or glory, as the focus for your new series?
Piper J. Drake: Private military contractors gave me a bit more freedom to work with my plots, honestly. Especially in the case of Gabriel Diaz and his fire team because they aren’t currently contracted when the story begins. This left them open to take on Maylin’s case, so to speak, where military personnel might not be free to do so. I also had a few inspirations from the old A Team series in mind. 😛
[Loved the A Team! I can hear the theme music now…]
TBS: I love that our hero and heroine have to travel to China to rescue Maylin’s kidnapped sister. Why choose China as a main setting?
PJD: Potential spoiler alert.
The story involves China. Maylin’s sister was kidnapped in China.
Ready? No seriously. This is a spoiler.
China is not the main setting. (insert suspenseful dun dun DUN sound effect here)
[See, this is what I get for writing the questions when I’ve only just started the story. Sorry about that! It was a great story, too!]
TBS: Gabe and Maylin get into some hairy situations and are on the move pretty steadily through the story. How did you keep the sparks flying between our lovers?
PJD: There’s a lot to be said for adrenaline highs. LOL.
On the other hand, there are quiet moments between action scenes to give Gabe and Maylin a chance to rest, catch their breath, and think. And in some cases, maybe decide not to think and take the plunge into something impulsive instead.
TBS: Our merc hero, Gabriel, is definitely an alpha…but he evades the deadly “alphahole” trap. What sets him apart from those too-bossy, controlling alphas that sometimes populate Romancelandia?
PJD: Gabe stops and listens. He’s also acutely aware of his own shortcomings when it comes to communication with people outside his line of work. He’s considerate.
TBS: What’s next for the Centurion Corporation and its team of military-vets-turned-mercenaries?
PJD: Book 2, Deadly Testimony, introduces a new person in need of protection. Lizzy returns as my heroine and she meets Kyle Yeun, a Korean-American businessman under witness protection.
I’ve already got a Pinterest board set up for inspiration, in case any readers are curious:
