Welcome to the Pre-Squee, a feature here at The Book Swarm and the fabulous Bewitched Bookworms. Some books, though they might not be coming out for a few months, need an early squee — we just can’t hold in our excitement about them! This feature gives us a chance to share a little bit of our love with our favorite people just a little bit early, whether it be for the story, cover, characters, or whatever. We’re quite flexible in our book love.

I’ve been a Mercedes Lackey fan forever now so I was pretty darned excited when this book hit my shelf, courtesy of the fabulous Disney-Hyperion people at BEA (thanks!). While there’s a Hunger Games-esque vibe going on with this, since the hunters are on camera and, while patrolling and doing their job, are also competing to be the Bestest Little Hunter in the City. Sarcasm aside, I really did enjoy this story. Despite some annoying little colloquialisms Joy has, she’s a pretty intriguing character, one I wanted to succeed as a Hunter.  I loved her hounds and how she called them from beyond. Definitely an interesting mix of fantasy and science fiction, dystopia and post-apocalypse. A little meh on the romance front but an intriguing start to a new series, one filled with plenty of nasty beasties as well as political shenanigans.
