Blog Tour: Shoalman Immortal by Toni Decker

Today, I’m excited to share with you an NA that falls into a genre that, I think, is woefully underserved — that of the NA paranormal. I don’t know about you but I’m a massive PNR fan. The more, the better! So, when the lovely Hannah @ The Irish Banana asked if I’d help her spread the word about a pair of authors who were contributing to that particular genre, I said yes! Hey, this might be right up your alley. And we get a guest post on one of my favorite topics — how the authors came up with and executed their story idea. Nice!

600x958_eBook_Shoalman_ImmortalAbout SHOALMAN IMMORTAL:

Falling in love was never supposed to be part of the picture.
Kyrissa Spears was born with a powerful, and deadly, gift. When she paints, she captures emotions so strong they cankill.Desperate to find a teacher capable of helping her unlock and control her abilities, Kyrissa’s search leads her to an artist who may be able to help her. And he’s the one person she can’t accidentally kill.
After five centuries of pain and loneliness, Robert Shoalman craves release from his immortality. He’s all but given up hope until he meets the beautiful and intriguing Kyrissa. She could paint his death and break the curse, but at the cost of destroying her gift and being lost to him forever—none of which will matter if the demon hunting him finds them first.

What if a painting could trap someone in time? Make them immortal for as long as the painting existed (enter Hero). And what if someone else (enter Villain) used that knowledge to curse someone into keeping them alive too?

Those were the questions that sparked the beginnings of The Shoalman Chronicles Series. We had a tortured hero, but what about his savior? Who was she? How would she save him? That’s where Kyrissa came in and where the partnership between Kira and Toni began.

Looking back, it seems ironic that a simple challenge between new friends turned into a great friendship and an amazing co-writing adventure. The challenge was NaNoWriMo. For those who don’t know what that is, you have one month to write a full-length novel (50,000 words). It became a greater challenge when we decided to enter into NaNo as co-writers for the first time as well.

Amazing doesn’t even begin to describe the journey. Both Toni and Kira love art, so incorporating art into all the stories was a no brainer (that and tattoos). Both lovers of YA and NA, what a better way than to create twenty-somethings and throw in a taste of romance and paranormal fantasy at the same time. Bingo. We have story concept.

The journey didn’t stop there though. We both liked what came out of that month-long intensive writing. So much so we decided to pair up and make it a real story, a real world, a real partnership and see what happened. Toni Decker Books happened and The Shoalman Chronicles began.

Now most people take their story and run with it. We did that, but anyone who has met us will tell you, Toni and Kira don’t do things normally. We needed a break from edits and decided to write a quick novella about two of the side characters in SHOALMAN IMMORTAL.

The characters had other ideas. Six weeks later, we had another complete novel that we both loved, IMAGES ETERNAL.

Um, now what? Did we mention the adventure aspect of our writing? We call it choose your own adventure style. So we chose to make the new book, Book 1 of the series and move the original story to Book 2. (Confused yet? We were.) Yet another challenge on the publishing journey for SHOALMAN IMMORTAL.

(What? Robert’s waited 500 years. He can wait another six months. *rolls eyes*)

Well, the journey has reached its destination finally. SHOALMAN IMMORTAL releases January 16, 2015, but the adventure is far from over. We have several more books planned for the series and who know what new character will pop up next.

When you have an Immortal to play with, the possibilities are ENDLESS!

ToniDecker1About Toni Decker:

Who is Toni Decker?

Two authors telling one sizzling story after another about twenty-somethings getting along in their own crazy, fantastical worlds. Both women are wives and mothers, sharing brain cells and characters as if they only exist with the other.

Toni, one half of the Toni Decker brain, is an avid reader of all things Young and New Adult while Kira, the Decker half of Toni Decker brain, devours fantasy for midnight snacks.

Together, their stories are one part New Adult, one part Fantasy and three parts of Holy Hotness.

We leave it up to the readers to decide who writes which character.

  1. Oh boy, a paranormal NA. We need way more of those. I like the idea of painting. I will be on the look out for this one.

  2. Sort of reminds me of the Dorian Gray novel. I love the way both of you came together to write the book. Great post!

As for the question. Nope won’t get a tattoo. Not because I haven’t thought about it, but because I know I would want something different after a time or it in another place. Until they invent changeable and movable tats, I should probably forgo them. LOL

see… this is why I don’t have one in real life cuz I can’t think of anything that I’d want to live with forever!!! Maybe if I were more impulsive and decisive, I’d go with my name in Korean 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

    • I (Toni half of Toni Decker) have a giant cross on my side/hip based off a necklace that my grandmother left me. Love it and would get tons more!
If you get impulsive, please share pics! Love tattoo pics.

    • Yes. Robert is definitely tortured *nods* and it’s mostly intention 🙂 We’re glad to pique your curiosity. Our “choose your own adventure” style writing works for us and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

  4. What an interesting idea about the painting and you know I love art and books that have art featured as a theme. As for a tattoo , I already have one…and will only ever have the one. It’s a Phoenix strategically wrapped around my left breast…I know so risque right…what can I say I got it while I was 19, in the army and about to be deployed after 9/11. I love it tho.

    • Glad to pique your interest. Hope you take a look at the book! Ooh, that tattoo sounds awesome.

And as a retired military spouse whose husband also entered service right at 9/11, I applaud you! Thank you.

    • Thanks Carmel. I (The Decker half of Toni Decker) can’t live without some kind of Fantasy or Paranormal twist to a story. We loved taking an unusual subject (death/immortality) and showing that with art all things can have a beauty to them.
