Pre-Squee: The Start of Me and You by Emery Lord

Welcome to the Pre-Squee, a feature here at The Book Swarm and the fabulous Bewitched Bookworms. Some books, though they might not be coming out for a few months, need an early squee — we just can’t hold in our excitement about them! Sure, we’ll do full reviews closer to the release date but this feature gives us a chance to share a little bit of our love, whether it be for the story, cover, characters, or whatever. We’re quite flexible in our book love.

Pre-Squee: The Start of Me and You by Emery LordThe Start of Me and You on March 31, 2014
Pages: 384

It’s been a year since it happened—when Paige Hancock’s first boyfriend died in an accident. After shutting out the world for a year, Paige is finally ready for a second chance at high school . . . and she has a plan. First: Get her old crush, Ryan Chase, to date her—the perfect way to convince everyone she’s back to normal. Next: Join a club—simple, it’s high school after all. But when Ryan’s sweet, nerdy cousin, Max, moves to town and recruits Paige for the Quiz Bowl team (of all things!) her perfect plan is thrown for a serious loop. Will Paige be able to face her fears and finally open herself up to the life she was meant to live?

You GUYS!! Holy cow, do I love this book! As you know, contemporary is not my go-to genre but, dagnabbit, if I could find more books like this, I might become a true convert, not just a toe-dipper. Now, because this is a pre-squee and the book doesn’t come out until March (!!), this isn’t a full review, just a tease.

This story, with its friendships and adorable awkwardness, is adorable and so very realistic in its portrayal of your average, everyday teen life. Yeah, there’s romance (NOT a triangle, btw) (and so sweet!!) but there’s also family, friends, character growth and Quiz Bowl! I’m a fan of the whole thing. In fact, when I was done, I toted it right to school and passed it along to one of my students (it has since changed hands multiple times…definitely a hit with my reading students).

Me either Mary, but Emery Lord just might make it my favorite genre ever. I can’t wait to read this one, I loved Open Road Summer so much! Yay for sweet romances with no love triangle! *happy dance*

  2. I’m not really into contemporary YA either!! So I’m gladly surprised you loved this so much! By the way, I wonder what you think of ”Wicked” by Jennifer L. Armentrout? I didn’t like it 😛 But I’m almost done with her ”Don’t Look Back” book, and I must say that I’m enjoying it!

  3. YESSS to this one! One thing I loved about this book is that it featured normal teens that I could relate to. Although I love contemporaries, often their lives in high school are nothing at all like mine was. But I related so well to these characters. And goodness, I loved Max!
