Pre-Squee: The Return by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Welcome to the Pre-Squee, a feature here at The Book Swarm and the fabulous Bewitched Bookworms. Some books, though they might not be coming out for a few months, need an early squee — we just can’t hold in our excitement about them! Sure, we’ll do full reviews closer to the release date but this feature gives us a chance to share a little bit of our love, whether it be for the story, cover, characters, or whatever. We’re quite flexible in our book love.

JLA is a powerhouse. Seriously. This woman cranks out fabulous books one after the other. Does she have clones of herself working in locked rooms? What *is* the secret to her magic? (Oh, wait. That’d be BIC-HOK…butt in chair, hands on keyboard. Yeah.)

THE RETURN is the first in a new spin-off series. And what a spin-off it is. Let’s take Seth from The Covenant series and find a way to redeem him while also making him fall in love, shall we? (Perhaps JLA is one of the trickster goddesses, laughing her booty off as she writes poor Seth into all these wonderfully untenable situations.) I love what a put-upon character Seth is. He’s stuck doing bloody work for the gods (something he kind of enjoys, though he’s getting a bit tired of it) and now, he’s forced to track down this chick and protect her. You can practically hear his deep sigh, can’t you? Oh, yes. A great read. Make sure it’s on your TBR!

Just a side note: you don’t have to have read The Covenant series before diving into this one. Of course, it helps because there are some references to and characters from the other series but it’s not necessary.

The Fates are cackling their bony asses off...

It's been a year since Seth made the deal with the gods that pledged his life to them. And so far, the jobs they've given him have been violent and bloody--which is kind of all right with him. But now Apollo has something else in mind for Seth. He's got to play protector while keeping his hands and fingers off, and for someone who really has a problem with restraint, this new assignment might be the most challenging yet.

Josie has no idea what this crazy hot guy's deal might be, but it's a good bet that his arrival means the new life she started after leaving home is about to be thrown into an Olympian-sized blender turned up to puree. Either Josie is going insane or a nightmare straight out of ancient myth is gunning for her.But it might be the unlikely attraction simmering between her and the golden-eyed, secret-keeping Seth that may prove to be the most dangerous thing of all.

Because history has once again been flipped to repeat.

  1. Didn’t I see a completely different cover for this? I’m pretty sure I did, but I’ve been wrong before. I liked Covenant well enough and I’m pretty excited about it. You’re right about her being a powerhouse, but her books sometimes work for me, and sometimes really not.
