Waiting On…BEA 2014 Edition

Posted 4 June, 2014 | Mary @ TheBookSwarm | Features | 42 Comments

Really, what I’m Waiting On at the moment is time. Time to read. Time to sit down for a days on end and read fabulous books day after day with no interruptions except maybe a cabana man with fabulous abs and arms to die for to bring me fruity drinks with ridiculous straws and sustenance in the form of chocolate and Pirate’s Booty so I can keep up my massive reading binge. (What? I’ll bet I can survive for many days on chocolate and Pirate’s Booty.)

Sadly, the cabana man is nowhere in sight but, as summer break is right around the corner, I might be able to swing a few uninterrupted days of reading. (Maybe I’ll just pretend I forgot to charge my phone…)

This comes just in time because, as you might know, I was playing at BEA last week and picked up some books that are well-worth waiting on.

MORTAL HEART (His Fair Assassin #3) by Robin LaFevers
This one was my to-die-for book at BEA. I’ve absolutely adored the series and can’t wait to read Annith’s story as well as catch up with the other assassin nuns, the Handmaidens of Death.

MADE FOR YOU by Melissa Marr
I’m a massive Melissa Marr fan — she’s not only a talented writer but a very gracious person — and was thrilled to hear she’d be at BEA so I could say hi again and get this new story signed. It’s billed as a contemporary YA novel that’s a twisted southern gothic tale of obsession, romance, and murder. I’m in.

BLACK ICE by Becca Fitzpatrick
I’ll admit it, I wasn’t the biggest fan of Fitzpatrick’s first series (Patch was too much of a manipulative bastard for me) but this one sounds quite delicious — a romantic thriller set in the wilds of Wyoming.

THE WALLED CITY by Ryan Graudin
This YA dystopian’s setting is actually based on Kowloon’s Walled City, a densely populated and mostly ungoverned settlement in Hong Kong. That alone intrigued me.

TALON (Talon #1) by Julie Kagawa
It’s by Julie Kagawa. There are dragons. ‘Nuff said.

TRIAL BY FIRE (The Worldwalker Trilogy #1) by Josephine Angelini
An alternate Salem where witches rule and a girl from another world must both survive and thrive? Nice. Plus, I had the opportunity to meet the lovely author and that just made me more interested.

THIS SHATTERED WORLD (Starbound #2) by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner
I really enjoyed the first in this series and was thrilled when Disney-Hyperion offered us a copy at the Book Blogger Con. I do miss the girl in the gorgeous dress but this cover’s colors are so pretty and I’m interested to meet two more characters from this world.

THE YOUNG WORLD by Chris Weitz
I know, I know. Another post-apocalyptic dystopian. But I just couldn’t pass it up, especially after seeing this ad in my bathroom stall:

*snort*

AFTERWORLDS by Scott Westerfeld
Well, it’s Scott Westerfeld. I loved his Uglies series and rumor has it this is rather meta as it involves a YA writer but alternates chapters with a fictional character in the “Afterworld”. Color me intrigued.

  1. Your list looks pretty impressively like mine! Time to read would be absolutely fabulous, but there is so much to do. I’d need a week of vacation right now.
I wanted to pass on The Young World, but everyone says its so fantastic that I make an exception and read another Dystopian!

  2. Someone was saying that After Worlds is a take off on Pride and Prejudice. That sounds very interesting. Mortal Heart was probably my most coveted pick too.

  3. i’m really happy you got the book you most wanted, can(‘t wait to see your opinion on talon since i love dragons^^

  4. I am so eager to find out how Mortal Heart turns out as I’m invested in that series and The Shattered World is a novel I’d do practically anything to get my hands on early. Talon looks amazing, but I haven’t had much luck with Kagawa’s work in the past and remain slightly skeptical over whether or not it’ll work for me, though I am curious. Wonderful haul and enjoy your reads, Mary!

  5. I am so glad we both got Mortal Heart <33333

AND OMG YESSSSSSSS I am basically waiting on all of these other books as well and managed to score ALL OF THEM, except the Young World, but I just got a netgalley widget and omg this post makes me excited to read all the things!

  6. You just popped up with Mortal Heart that one day, you are a bit of a BEA magician my friend:) I can’t wait for Talon (DRAGONS!!!!!!) and Black Ice. And This Shattered World. And Afterworlds. And basically this entire list. I’m still waiting for my books to arrive, they should be here today. Hopefully in the one piece:)

  7. So many fabulous sounding reads, Mary! How do you not start opening them all and peek inside at all the goodness?!! *Sigh* I can’t wait to see what you think of them. 🙂

  8. Awesome! You got a copy of Mortal Heart. Good for you! I hope you love it. I am excited for that one, Shattered World, Talon and curious about Black Ice as it is set near where I grew up. I would have totally picked up that book because of the toilet paper ad as well. Glad you had a lovely time.

  9. *whistles innocently*

    *creates invisibility cloak*

    *steals ARCs* 😉

Oh you have some great reads! I so hope you enjoy all of them. I can’t wait to hear what you think of especially a few of those. I do have Black Ice as well and I felt the same as you did about Patch. LOL Hopefully we won’t be disappointed. 🙂

  10. Mortal Heart and Talon!!! The Walled City sounds good, I hadn’t heard of it before. I love how they put ads even in the bathroom stalls. Lol

  11. Looks like you got some really good books! That Melissa Marr books does sound interesting. I’ve never read any of hers before! Thanks for sharing and enjoy the books!

  12. “Really, what I’m Waiting On at the moment is time.” UGH YES!! This is my whole life basically. Too many books, zero time to read them. AHHH this post is giving me such grabby hands! You basically got the jackpot of BEA books. Mortal Heart, Afterworlds, Talon, Black Ice…. ahhhh I need them all. Can’t wait to hear what you think of them!

  13. YES! I agree I just need more time to read all of the precious books that I was able to grab. I have two stacks of “DEFINITELY WANT TO READ STAT” sitting against my walls and I’m lamenting where I’m going to find the time to fit them all in before publication. I think I can do it though *wink* who needs sleep anyway?

  14. I’m thrilled you got a copy of Mortal Heart. I love that series as well. I hope they have a copy at the ALA. I’m also hoping to get my hands on Black Ice there, too. Enjoy your books, and welcome back, Mary! 🙂

  15. I cannot wait to read all of those as well! I really love the idea behind this post. I wish I’d thought of it. I like the idea that you’re highlighting some of your most exciting grabs. Happy reading, friend!
