Book Orgy: The Tairen Souls Series by C.L. Wilson

I went past mere binge this weekend (and week). I had an all-out orgy. It started with a couple of random tweets I saw from several romance readers who were excited to see a favorite author’s upcoming release on Edelweiss. It was THE WINTER KING by C.L. Wilson, which comes out the end of July, and I loved it. Come to find out, Wilson has another series that’s beloved by fantasy romance fans: the Tairen Soul series.

Of course, I had to read it, especially if it was anything like her other book. I finished the first book on Saturday. After that, I said, “Screw all those waiting books on my TBR. I must read this entire series. Now.” I read all day Sunday (literally, pausing only to eat and pee). I read at work (I never ever do this but I couldn’t stop). I finished the entire series by Tuesday.

Once he had scorched the world.
Once he had driven back overwhelming darkness.

Once he had loved with such passion, his name was legend…

TAIREN SOUL
Long ago, in the magical holocaust known as the Mage Wars, the immortal Fey and their allies fought to defeat the grasping evil of the Elden Mages and their dark-gifted supporters. During those wars, in a fit of grief-induced madness caused by the death of his mate, Fey shapeshifter Rain Tairen Soul nearly destroyed the world in a blaze of tairen fire.

Now a thousand years later, a new threat calls him from the Fading Lands, back into the world that had cost him so dearly. Now an ancient, familiar evil is regaining its strength, and a new voice beckons him–more compelling, more seductive, more maddening than any before.

As the power of his most bitter enemy grows and ancient alliances crumble, the wildness in his blood will not be denied. The tairen must claim his truemate and embrace the destiny woven for him in the mists of time.

When Ellie — human, plain, poor — calls Rain, King of the Fey and the only Tairen Soul, from the sky, her world changes irrevocably. But it’s not as easy as ooh, I’m your mate, let’s get it on. Nope. Ellie’s betrothed, the queen distrusts the Fey, and evil has invaded the human kingdom. Rain’s only just returned to sanity, after centuries of world-scorching madness. And Ellie has a powerful magic in her that’s been buried, hidden away for her own safety. While the connection between Rain and Ellie is immediate, Ellie is scared. She’s afraid of Rain, her magic, leaving her family and the Darkness that peers back at her when she dreams. (I mean, how can you NOT want to keep going after that?!?)

She feared the dark visions and the magic within her. And she dreamed of the miraculous love that could save her.

Like an enchanted fairy tale prince he stepped from the sky to claim her—the Fey King, her destiny, her one and true love.

But behind the mesmerizing beauty of Rain’s violet eyes Ellysetta saw the passionate hunger of the beast . . . and a sorrow, deep and ancient, that she alone could heal. Only for him would she embrace the frightening power that dwells within her. Only with him at her side could she confront the shadows that haunt her soul. For an epic battle looms on the horizon—and only united can they hope to turn back the armies of the darkness.

Ellie and Rain’s world is amazingly complex, filled with characters capable of both great good and great evil. The Elden Mages represent the worst of the worst, gathering and hoarding power like misers. Ellie, on the other hand, represents a force of either great good or evil, depending on the choices she makes. This scares her to death (I mean, can you imagine having terrible nightmares of fields of bones and the death of thousands at your hand while you sit on your throne and laugh? I’d be freaked out, too.). Rain knows that Ellie will be safe when the mating bond is complete but that’s so not going to happen anytime soon…and, of course, they’re running out of time. Ellie is susceptible to the High Mage and his marks, which will bind her soul to his and put into his control her ever-growing power. (Eep! Can you feel the tension?)

Rain, the proud and haunted Fey King, risked everything to follow his heart and his destiny to Ellysetta—his truemate, his love, the woodcarver’s daughter who possessed miraculous gifts she did not understand. He defied the nobles of Celieria to claim her, battled demons and Elden mages to wed her. And now he must protect her—and his imperiled kingdom—with magic, steel, and scorching flame. For his soul-kin, the magical tairen, are dying, and only the Fey King’s bride can save them . . . if Rain can help his beloved embrace the magic within her and forge the unbreakable bond of passion and power necessary to save her soul.

The tairen (huge magical flying cats, FTW!) are dying, and Ellie is destined to save them, if only she can discover the way to do so. Though the mating bond is still not complete, it grows stronger every day as Ellie and Rain fall deeper in love. However, Ellie still doesn’t have faith in her goodness especially when the dreams she has are filled with visions of death and destruction at her hand. As Ellie gets a handle on her powers, she is also changing the Fey, challenging their beliefs and changing the way they see and do things. This gets her and Rain booted from the protection of the Fading Lands, thrust into a world at war.

The Fey King Rain and his truemate Ellysetta share a passionate love unrivaled in the history of their world—and a forbidden power that made them outcasts from the Fading Lands. As war looms and the evil mages of Eld threaten to rip their world asunder, they must fight to defend the very kingdom and people who reviled them.

Only by trusting completely in their love—and in themselves—can Rain and Ellysetta hope to defeat the gathering forces of Darkness. But it will take more than the strength of their devotion to endure. They must unlock the secrets of the past and find the courage to embrace the dangerous destiny that awaits them. Only they can save their world, but that victory might cost them their lives.

Ellie now has four of the six Marks required to bind her soul forever to the High Mage but he still doesn’t have control over her. Her love for Rain, the Fey and the tairen keeps her grounded and focused, though the Darkness tries to tempt her to do things that would burn another Mark onto her skin. The mating bond between Rain and Ellie is strong but still not complete and madness is threatening Rain yet again. He’ll burn the entire world down if anything happens to Ellie, though he might just burn the world if they don’t get the mating bond completed soon. Even though they’re banished from their lands, the pair continues to fight for the cause and prevent the Eld from overrunning both the human lands and the Fey’s.

Seers had long foreseen an extraordinary destiny for Ellysetta Baristani. Already she had won the heart of the Fey King–the magnificent Rain, ever her ally, eternally her love. She had saved the offspring of the magical tairen and fought beside her legendary mate against the armies of Eld. But the most powerful–and dangerous–Verse of her Song had yet to be sung. As the final battle draws nigh and evil tightens its grip upon her soul–will Ellysetta secure the world for Light or plunge it into Darkness for all eternity? As she and Rain fight for each other, side by side, will they find a way to complete their truemate bond and defeat the evil High Mage of Eld before it’s too late, or must they make the ultimate sacrifice to save their world?

Nope. Not gonna tell you any more. Read this. It’s fabulous. While I’m not always a fan of the “mate” trope, it really worked in this one because it was a strong thread of conflict and torment throughout the entire series. The secondary characters are fantastic. I particularly liked Ellie’s troublemaking little sisters and the two Fey who got stuck on constant babysitting duties (poor guys). The lost Fey who Ellie saved, the quintet who protect Ellie, the gorgeous tairen who adopts Ellie as her kit, even the humans who work so hard to protect their lands, all of them add dimension and depth to the entire series.
