Waiting On…ROOMS by Lauren Oliver

An adult novel by Lauren Oliver? And a ghost story at that? I’m in.

I really like the simplicity of the cover, with the branches creeping in.

Paranormal mystery
320 pages, hardcover
Expected publication: September 23, 2013
Publisher: Ecco

Wealthy Richard Walker has just died, leaving behind his country house full of rooms packed with the detritus of a lifetime. His estranged family—bitter ex-wife Caroline, troubled teenage son Trenton, and unforgiving daughter Minna—have arrived for their inheritance.

But the Walkers are not alone. Prim Alice and the cynical Sandra, long dead former residents bound to the house, linger within its claustrophobic walls. Jostling for space, memory, and supremacy, they observe the family, trading barbs and reminiscences about their past lives. Though their voices cannot be heard, Alice and Sandra speak through the house itself—in the hiss of the radiator, a creak in the stairs, the dimming of a light bulb.

The living and dead are each haunted by painful truths that will soon surface with explosive force. When a new ghost appears, and Trenton begins to communicate with her, the spirit and human worlds collide—with cataclysmic results.

Waiting On Wednesday is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

  1. Ah I’m not a ghost fan -but do love Lauren Oliver. The cover is awesome – I’d love to see it once for real

  2. Love the cover and Lauren Oliver but I don’t really do ghost stories. I wonder how an adult story from her is going to be? Hope you enjoy this one 🙂

  3. I stay away from ghost stories if they’re too scary, but I love Lauren Oliver though I DNF’ed PANIC. Still, I’m very excited for this one and agree with you on the cover!

  4. I only read Lauren’s dystopian series – Delirium, but I have to admit that I’m curious about this one (even though ghost stories are not my thing).

  5. Absolutely love ghost stories so will definitely be picking up a copy of Rooms as soon as I can! I’m intrigued to see what Lauren Oliver’s first adult novel is like and I love that cover 🙂

  6. Oh yes, LOVE that cover Mary! And I’m excited that Lauren Oliver is branching out into adult mysteries, I can’t wait to see what she does with this one. Sign me up for sure:)

  7. I absolutely love this cover too, Mary! I’ve had a hit-or-miss relationship with Oliver’s work, but I am very curious to give this one a try. Great pick this week!

  8. I’ve actually not read a lot of Lauren Oliver. Mostly because I’m so angry about her love triangle in the Delirium series. I’m shallow like that. But this one looks intriguing, even though I’m mostly over ghosts. But it sounds creepy and that cover is great! Thanks for pointing this out to me.
