It’s never a good thing when the person you’re searching for is in league with the devil (or, in this case, a very evil vampire named Jasper). Bad things happen, evil’s afoot and all that. But PI Nikki doesn’t know that when she starts her search for a millionaire’s daughter. To her, it’s just a routine missing persons case. Vampire Michael’s been on Jasper’s tail for ages and has no problems using Nikki as a means to an end. Nikki’s got trust issues (bad childhood, users in her past) and Michael’s got anger issues — these kids have got some work to do before the romance becomes an actual romance. Overall, the plot and characters are rather lackluster, not at all like Arthur’s later series (this series was first published about a decade ago so, of course, Arthur’s grown as an author since then, considering she’s continued to write and publish.). Not the most promising start to a new series but, as I had the second and third books already, I figured I’d try the next one.

Nikki is still not a favorite heroine but this story’s better than the first. I definitely prefer a bad-assed or at least, a sassy-mouthed heroine to a wishy-washy limp rag of a gal. In this second installment, Nikki’s embroiled in another case and, low and behold, Michael’s business just happens to coincide with hers. He’s been away for months, trying to gain control of his hunger (he’s hundreds of years old. Shouldn’t that already be under control?) and when he reappears on scene, the couple waffle about their relationship. While I want to know more about the world, I’m liking what I see. There are some interesting creatures and some definite creativity in the series as a whole.

CHASING THE SHADOWS (Nikki and Michael #3) by Keri Arthur

Again, Michael’s been away and the two get together again because their cases overlap. I like Nikki because she puts others’ needs above her own safety. However, this puts her at odds with Michael, who only wants to protect her and keep her safe. As he tries to get all caveman with her, she resists and their relationship battles continue. It’s never easy, is it? But *finally* the two take the time to actually talk about where they’re going and how they’re going to get there, rather than just arguing and getting pissed off at one another. Another good thing about this book is that I could really see the author’s growth as a writer. Kind of cool to see her evolution into the great writer she is today. A good series, though I think I might be done with it.

  1. WOW. I’m impressed you made it through 3 of these when you didn’t love the heroine or the story that much. I’m all for a hot vampire (why do they never get old to me?), But I agree that he should have his hunger under control by now! It all starts sounding like a plot device to separate and bring the two back together in each book, which is redundant. I think I’ll be skipping these, but I’m glad you found enough to keep reading and that the heroine grew on you!
