Waiting on Wednesday: VIVIAN DIVINE IS DEAD by Lauren Sabel

Before I get to my WoW pick, I have a little pick-me-up (from KMart, of places…). You might have seen it but it’s *definitely* worth another look:

Dear Book,
Please, fabulous-sounding book, be mysterious and funny with a hint of romance (or a lot of romance. That’d be cool, too. But don’t lose the story for the romance.). Your premise sounds fantastic and I can’t wait to meet Vivian…and the killer, of course.

I love your cover. The swirlies and the cool font plus the sugar skull and palm trees all add to the overall feel of the book and I’d certainly snatch it all up (though I did think Christmas when I first saw it…probably because I’m being brainwashed by all those damned holiday commercials. Anyone else think they’re too damned early? Yes, they make me want to curse. A lot. Thank goodness for Netflix and my DVR. Skip right over those bastards. …and after saying that, of course I have a Christmas commercial on the post today. But at least they’re hot men!).

YA Mystery
336 pages, hardcover
Expected publication: June 3, 2014
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books

When a death threat arrives with teen celebrity Vivian Divine’s fan mail, Vivian has no choice but to go on the run to Mexico. She soon discovers, though, that her Oscar-nominated performance killing villains on-screen did nothing to prepare her for escaping a madman in real life. Some people say he’s a hero, others tremble in his presence, but one thing is clear: he won’t stop until Vivian is in his grasp. Why didn’t she pay more attention during those judo lessons for her role in Zombie Killer?

Vivian finds an ally in the mysterious and charming Nick. He is everything Hollywood boys are not-genuine, kind, and determined to see Vivian for who she really is. But even he seems like he can’t be trusted-what could he be hiding?

Beat up, hungry, and more confused than ever about who she’s running from, Vivian is living in a real-life blockbuster horror flick. But there’s no option to yell “cut” like there is on set….

  1. The cover is a little Christmas-y, isn’t it? And yes, the commercials are annoying. But this book does sound so good! I’m a sucker for stories about actors and YA mysteries. Thanks for putting Vivian on my radar!

  2. I hadn’t seen that KMart ad before Mary?! *dies* That final wiggle at the end just might have done me in. *stares* SO AWESOME! I feel like I might have to watch it a couple more times just to take everything in though….

I’m really excited for this book too! Love the cover and the retro-Hollywood feel to it and I’m of course hugely excited about the romance. And the killer. That sounded creepy but you know what I mean, right? 🙂

  3. Obviously, as a Euro girl, I haven’t seen the commercial before. Thanks so much for sharing it, Mary! It’s hilarious, it totally made my day.

I haven’t seen the book either, but you’re right about it looking and sounding gorgeous. 🙂

  4. Oh wow that cover is absolutely stunning Mary and how awesome does this book sound? It reminds me of She Went All the way by Meg Cabot, a book which I loved! It also had a nice mix of mystery and romance to it. I really hope this book lives up to your expectations. And how amazing is that advert! It totally made my day! Thanks so much for sharing! 😉

  5. Oh Mary, we DVR all of our shows, so I haven’t had the pleasure of viewing this commercial..thank you for the giggles. This book sounds good, and yes I can see where you saw Christmas. 🙂

  6. That commercial is a bit, ummm- okay, I guess I’m speechless. I’m hoping the ringing balls, er bells, goes over the kids heads. Yikes.

That cover is AMAZING! And the book sounds terrific! I hadn’t heard of it yet so thanks for sharing!

  7. Ooh this sounds wonderful! I hope it lives up to the synopsis. And YES it is too early—the decorations are up, the tree is lit in our big shopping center and the commercials are overloading, and it’s not even Thanksgiving yet. *sigh* I can get behind this kind of holiday vid though. 🙂

  8. I agre about the cover! though are there some skulls on it? Wonder what that is about? I’m a sucker for these celebrity books, and this one sounds fun. This is totally off the wall, but it makes me thing of that dog cartoon movie Bolt, where he plays an action hero but finds out that he’s not really one in the world. BUt I’m sure this book is NOTHING like that movie. HAHA. Anyway. Great pick.

  9. Who knew a story about running from a killer would sound like so much fun? I love that this seems so different from most YAs out there, as well. Great choice, Mary! 🙂
