ARCHANGEL’S LEGION (Guild Hunter #6) by Nalini Singh
Paranormal Romance
384 pages, paperback
Available October 29, 2013
Publisher: Jove

Angels are falling from the sky in New York, struck down by a vicious, unknown force.

Vampires are dying impossibly of disease.

Guild hunter Elena Deveraux and the Archangel Raphael must discover the source of the wave of death before it engulfs their city and their people, leaving New York a ruin and Raphael’s Tower under siege by enemy archangels.

Yet even as they fight desperately to save the city, an even darker force is stirring, its chill eyes trained on New York…and on Raphael. Rivers of crimson and nightmares given flesh, the world will never again be the same…

First Date: There’s some serious badassery in the Guild Hunter…guild. Quick recap of the last couple of books: Elana hooked up with the scary (but totally rad) Archangel Raphael and turned into a be-winged immortal, the Cascade bestowed additional — and very scary — powers on members of the Cadre which, in turn, disrupted alliances and woke those long asleep. So. Much. Drama. (How is it even archangels and immortal beings can’t get past the drama? You’d think they’d be all zen about stuff or at least able to solve things without massacring everyone. But, no. They’re all up in each others’ grill, doing some chest-thumping and death threatening. It’s like eternal high school. Is that hell? I think it might be… Well, except in books. Then it rocks.)

Second Date: While this whole book is filled with awesome (as is this series, people. Seriously.), my favorite parts were the interactions and banter between Elena and Raphael. As a baby immortal, Elena’s still learning her way through her prickly new world and Raphael’s there to back her up. Not that she needs all that much help, considering she’s a booty-kicking hunter in her own right. As their relationship deepens and develops, Elena steps up as Raphael’s Consort, taking her rightful place at his side…until he pulls his alpha-macho crap. Like when they were out on the hunt:
“I’m the Hunter,” Elena reminded [macho man]. “I should go first.”
“Of course you may go first. When I am dead.”
*snort* (I’ve seen this exchange quoted a couple of times–definitely resonated with readers!) These two make a formidable pair, especially as Raphael gains new and rather scary powers and allies. Without Elena to ground him, Raphael could go very, very dark. And that would be bad. Together, they’ll need to stay strong to keep their people and territory safe from the multitude of threats arrowing their way.

Third Date: Is it bad that I already want more of Elena and Raphael? Actually, I want Aodhan, that diamond-coated, introverted angel (who no doubt poops sparkly rainbows). He needs a hot love story, especially now that he’s coming out of his shell. Archangel’s Legion is a stellar addition to the Guild Hunter series, pitting Elena, Raphael and his Seven against insane, immortal beings who want nothing more than to rule and destroy the world as we know it. Filled to the brim with action and intrigue, this story is pretty darned unputdownable and turned into an all-nighter. Good thing I was carrying my S.L.U.T. bag! (That’s my single lady’s utility tote…always be prepared, people.)

  1. Oh, wow. I only read the first two books in her Psy Changeling series, but I really enjoyed the writing and the characters and always meant to go back to it. Now I’m thinking I should just start this series instead. I don’t really like PNR all that much, but this is different. It seems to be far more entertaining.
I’m glad you had such a great time on your dates. 🙂

  2. Haha, this review cracked me up! You always need to leave home with the S.L.U.T. bag, just in case. I haven’t started this series yet, but Elena and Raphael sound like two characters I want in my life. Aodhan too, because who doesn’t want a diamond-coated angel in their lives? Glad you had such a fun date, and that it looks like you’re headed for a long term fling. 🙂

NO MARY! HE IS MINE! Actually you know what? I’m going to take a page of Raphael’s book and be magnanimous – you absolutely may have Aodhan. When I am dead 😉

I loved him in this book, I can’t wait for his story (and Illium’s!). Is it me, or was there an Aodhan/Illium vibe in this one a little bit? Just me? Awesome.

I love this series so much, Elena and Raphael just make me happy.

    • Are we going to have to fight again? We always end up in a draw! And, yeah, there was definitely an Adohan/Illium vibe going on. Don’t know if it’s going to just be a bromance or an actual romance…I’m good either way!

  4. I love this series, the characters are amazing and despite the dangerous aspects (and often gruesome battles) there is still a good amount of humor.

I did start the author’s Psy-Changling series, but somewhere around book 11 I started to get bored and the books began to feel formulaic, plus the constant introduction of new characters and the lack of progress on the overall plotlines just didn’t work for me. Thus far, it does not feel as though this series is going the same way, and I’m really happy about that!

  5. *dies laughing*

I have this series sitting on my tbr (well, the first 4) and I so need this one. You will let me know if Aodhan does poop rainbows before I dive into his story, right? ROFL! Oh and so NOW I know what a SLUT bag really is! LOVE your speed dates! 😀

  6. I love banter in books! It’s often my favorite parts. And there’s a diamond-coated angel in this? That sounds different lolz. I love your reviews they’re so funny to read! >.<

  7. This series sounds great! I’m not sure if I ever got the first, I should check. That banter sounds exactly like what I love in UF!

  8. Oh yay! More Elena and Raphael. I only read the first few and while I liked the other characters I wanted more of them.

Did she ever write about Illium (is that his name? The one with the blue feathers I think) I wanted his story.

  9. WOW Raphael really gets around in books doesn’t he? Why is he the favorite angel to write a book around – Angelfall, Shadowed, this one, etc. Let me clarify, this is book 6 in a series that stars the same couple all the way through? I’m not sure I would be able to wait to get to this point in their relationship! I love some good banter and tension while watching a couple kick ass together. I hadn’t heard of this series, so thanks for the introduction.

no it’s not the same couple all the way through; book 4 and 5 are about Raphael’s Seven: Dmitri and Jason
