In 1897 London, something not quite human is about to awaken…

When mechanical genius Emily is kidnapped by rogue automatons, Finley Jayne and her fellow misfits fear the worst. What’s left of their archenemy, The Machinist, hungers to be resurrected, and Emily must transplant his consciousness into one of his automatons—or forfeit her friends’ lives.

With Griffin being mysteriously tormented by the Aether, the young duke’s sanity is close to the breaking point. Seeking help, Finley turns to Jack Dandy, but trusting the master criminal is as dangerous as controlling her dark side. When Jack kisses her, Finley must finally confront her true feelings for him…and for Griffin.

Meanwhile, Sam is searching everywhere for Emily, from Whitechapel’s desolate alleyways to Mayfair’s elegant mansions. He would walk into hell for her, but the choice she must make will test them more than they could imagine.

To save those she cares about, Emily must confront The Machinist’s ultimate creation—an automaton more human than machine. And if she’s to have any chance at triumphing, she must summon a strength even she doesn’t know she has….

First Date: Oh, Emily, you’re totally charming me with your brilliance. I love that you’ve created all these fantastic little mechanical creatures and that you’re able to whip up communicators and aether disrupters and whatever else your group might need. But, can I ask a silly question? Why do you call that adorable boy of yours (Sam) “lad”? It makes you sound like a crotchety old Scottish lady rather than the gorgeous wee lass that you are. At least Sam doesn’t seem to mind.

Second Date: What is up with this new character (I think I like her!)? She’s an automaton who’s got organites that are growing skin, creating organs and developing her brain…she’s becoming a “real” person with thoughts of her own yet she’s a prisoner who’s scheduled to die so someone else (someone REALLY BAD — ooh, I don’t like this baddie!!) can live. *insert evil cackle* There’s an awful lot going on in this third installment and, even though it’s probably doable, I don’t suggest starting with this book. All of our favorite characters are present, with their own little dramas (GRIFFIN!! WTH is going on with you?!? Finley really needs to kick your butt into shape.), but they come together to rescue Emily and solve the mysteries swirling around.

Third Date: Emily, you certainly keep everyone — including Sam — on their toes. You’re smart and kind, brave and fiercely protective of the ones you love. If you were a guy, I’d marry you. As it is, I’ll be throwing rice and cheering when you and Sam finally get married.

  1. Oooo I’m thinking I need to read this series Mary! I like the sound of Emily, I so enjoy a character who keeps everyone (including me) on their toes! Looking forward to meeting Sam too, I’ll probably be right next to you throwing rice at their wedding. Win.

  2. I just love steampunk, don’t you? It’s like Disneyland for book lovers. All those gadgets are simply brilliant and since Emily makes them, she sounds like my kind of girl. I really need to get to this series NOW. I was just looking at the prevous installments on Better World Books.

  3. Oh how I love Emily! She’s so smart and capable and her gadgets are the coolest. I’m still not caught up on this series, but I can see I have a lot of fun ahead of me. I want to know what Griffin is up to (sounds like trouble), and I want more awkward/sweet Emily-Sam love. I’d throw rice at their wedding alongside you. Fabulous speed date (as usual—LOVE these)!

  4. I’m so with you… Griffin needs his arse kicked and I’ll be next to you throwing rice at Emily and Sam! I have to admit, I didn’t love this one as much as I wanted. Still was so glad Emily was featured in this one.

  5. This sounds so cool! The reason I like steampunk is for all the awesome gadgets and ideas you can find in them but they don’t all take advantage of this. It sounds like Kady has though and I like how new characters are introduced as the series progresses. Great review, doll!

  6. I love Emily so much-I think this series has a lot of really cool female characters and I appreciate how important her brain is to the whole team. Do you think there’s going to be a fourth book? I originally thought it was a trilogy but feel like the ending left room for more.

  7. I hadn’t made the connection to the other two books, you know? It sounds like this one was the best one yet, and I’m glad you enjoyed it so much.

Sam and Emily sound like a great couple, and that automaton like she got a bi story.

  8. The covers for this series are so gorgeous, I like all of them. I have to confess I had mixed feelings about the first book, although I did like it, so I haven’t continued on yet–but seeing how you’ve practically proposed to Emily makes me want to pick up the sequels stat!

  9. You know, I kind of adore these books. It was fun to hear from Emily, although I basically always just want more Finley/Griffin… I ship them so hard, even when Griffin is being a bit of an idiot.
