What a gorgeously written novel! Is Howard really a debut author? Woot! I hope this means *many* more stories will be coming down the pike.

Instantly addictive, SPLINTERED immerses the reader in a Tim Burton-esque world populated by fantastical creatures and quirky characters.

The only quibble I had with this story is Jeb, Alyssa’s crush. He’s kind of a jerk and I wish she would have left him as lunch for any number of horrifyingly hungry critters. Morpheus, the other guy in Alyssa’s life, was also kind of a jerk but at least he was wide open about his goals and downfalls.

SCENT OF MAGIC (Healer #2) by Maria V. Snyder
Fantasy
414 pages, paperback
Available now (December 2012)
Publisher: Harlequin Mira

The second in a series (a trilogy, I believe), SCENT OF MAGIC picks up where we left off — in the middle of a war. Everyone believes Avry to be dead, which leaves her in a unique position and allows her to infiltrate the enemy camp.

This time around we also get Kerrick’s POV, which is great, considering he came in as kidnapper and somewhat heartless in the first story (Well, until Avry fell for him. Then I was all Team Kerrick.). There’s some serious tension in this second book — no schlumpy middle at ALL! The Fifteen Realms are in a tailspin, with all looking exceptionally bleak. We’ll see where it goes from her

  1. I have Splintered, but I mostly got it for the cover. *guilty* But I’m glad you really enjoyed it! Maybe I’ll actually read it and not just gaze at the cover.

I can’t believe I haven’t read Scent of Magic! I got it before it even came out so I’m GOING to read it soon! Now that Vine makes you review everything before you get more I’ll have to anyway. I’m really excited to though and I want Kerrick’s POV! Woo hoo!

    • LOVE Splintered’s cover! And you definitely need to read Scent of Magic.

What is Amazon’s deal, wanting 100% reviews?!? I got that email and was all, ‘WTF!!!” But it did get me to clear my cache out. Except for my two new ones, I’m all reviewed. Now, to keep up with that!

  2. Yay for more MVS love! And I still need to read Splintered, it sounds really intriguing and atmospheric! And really, Tim Burtonesque is like autobuy language, so I’m sold. Great reviews!
