It hasn’t been the best week for Jessica McClain.
Her mate has been kidnapped by a Goddess hell-bent on revenge — but Jessica is playing for keeps.
Because she’s the only female werewolf in town…it comes with its own set of rules…and powers.
Aided by two vamps, two loyal Pack members, and one very reluctant human, Jessica must rescue her man while coming to terms with what being a wolf really means.
All in a day’s work for a girl.
Oh, I’m really liking this series! Book two picks up right where we left off — Jessica, newborn werewolf and newly in love, is going after her mate (who’s not a werewolf but, instead, some kind of cat shifter) because he was kidnapped by a bitchy Goddess (really, aren’t they all?) who wants his entrails for earrings. Yeah. She’s a real keeper.
I’ve been reading a lot of go-go-go books lately and this one is no exception, jumping in from the first page and not stopping until the very last moment. Seriously, I was exhausted following Jessica and her gang of Scoobies as they tromped around the forest, tracking down the Bitch Goddesses’ lair. And by exhausted, I mean in a wow-all-this-hiking-would-have-killed-me-but-I-like-reading-it exhausted. So, in a good way. Especially considering Jessica and those who with her are great road trip buddies and a blast to hang out with.
Rescuing her mate isn’t the only thing on Jessica’s plate. As the only female werewolf, she fulfills a scary prophecy which as all the demons (and many werewolves) on edge, since, supposedly, she’s destined to “Vanquish All Evil”. Lots of folks are gunning for her death, so it’s probably best when she secures her father’s permission (he is Alpha, after all) to save Rourke.
Then there’s the human cop, Ray, who’s been making Jessica’s everyday life miserable. He finds out just a little too much, pokes his nose in just a little too far and winds up being dragged (well, kidnapped, technically) along on Jessica’s Woodland Adventure. To put it simply, Ray’s a hardheaded jackass. There were times I wished the gang would drop him down a ravine. But, in the end, Ray surprised me and, even though he’s still a jackass, he’s at least a useful one.
Even with the quick pace, there’s still plenty of worldbuilding within these pages. We learn more about the Prophecy of the True Lycan and its possibilities/threats, Jessica’s burgeoning powers and abilities, the strange and deadly creatures who inhabit both this world and the Underworld, and the issues that Jessica herself presents to the werewolf hierarchy. All without huge info dumps.
With a fabulously kick-ass heroine, a rich world populated with intriguing creatures and mythology, and quest to save a love, HOT BLOODED is a fantastic addition to the urban fantasy world.
