After twelve years of secret training, Atticus O’Sullivan is finally ready to bind his apprentice, Granuaile, to the earth and double the number of Druids in the world. But on the eve of the ritual, the world that thought he was dead abruptly discovers that he’s still alive, and they would much rather he return to the grave.
Having no other choice, Atticus, his trusted Irish wolfhound, Oberon, and Granuaile travel to the base of Mount Olympus, where the Roman god Bacchus is anxious to take his sworn revenge—but he’ll have to get in line behind an ancient vampire, a band of dark elves, and an old god of mischief, who all seem to have KILL THE DRUID at the top of their to-do lists.
If you haven’t started this series, you definitely need to pick it up. A smart, sexy Druid and a snarky wolfhound as a faithful companion — how can you possibly go wrong?
Truth is, you can’t.
This fifth installment of the Iron Druid Chronicles, TRAPPED catches up with Atticus and his apprentice twelve years later. Twelve years after “dying”, after killing some really nasty skinwalkers, and after killing Thor (yes, that Thor…also known as the “Thunder Thug”), Atticus emerges from seclusion and training his apprentice to be the second Druid in the world. He and Granuaile need to find some “old country” so he can bind her to the earth and make her a full-fledged Druid. But the gods are quite literally conspiring against them.
While Atticus is still the same old sexy Druid we know and love, Granuaile shows amazing growth in this book, moving from Druid wannabe to I-can-totally-take-care-of-myself chick who doesn’t take shite from anyone including all the gods and Atticus himself. Still, I really wish Atticus would stop thinking with his little brain around her and get on with the Druiding. I do like romance in my novels but I’ve never really wanted Atticus and Granuaile to get together. *shrugs* I prefer the focus of this series to stay on Atticus and Oberon and all their zany, death-defying adventures with Granuaile as a rockin’ sidekick. (I also think Granuaile should get her own series. She’s that awesome).
In HAMMERED (book #3), Atticus does some really bad stuff (killing Thor and several others including Ratatosk, the giant squirrel who lived in the World-Tree), makes some bad decisions and they’re finally catching up to him. To be fair, he feels really bad about it but had to do it to help friends and loved ones. Still, it’s a vicious circle with threads that extend out into all pantheons. Pull one and it all comes unraveled.
And then there’s Oberon. This fantastic pup keeps Atticus fully grounded and centered in reality. Plus, he keeps things light, especially when there’s so much darkness surrounding them. His running commentary on human mating habits and odes to sausage make for some truly laugh-out-loud moments.
Kevin Hearne spins an amazing tale filled with insane Maenads, pissed-off gods, vampires and dark elves all gunning for snarky Atticus’s cute little arse. Ah, now that’s a good story.
